with an offence in Bright street, Cobden on September 27th. After hearing the evidence of the police the Magistrate adjourned the ease for a week to enable the defendants to be medically examined. George Newton and Giovanni Pavin were each fined 10s, with 10s costs, for fighting in a street in Greymouth, on October 12th.

Walter Batchelor, who did not appear, was ordered to pay £. 8, arrears on a maintennace order, and was fined £3, in default 14 days' imprisonment, the warrant not to issue provided payment is made within seven days. George Saunders, alias Waters, alias Anderson, was charged that, on October 17th, at Greymouth, he attempted to steal 6s 8d from Ethel Marsh, by means of a trick; that on October 17th, at Greymouth, he attempted to steal 6s 3d from Bertha Simon, by means of a trick; that on September 29th, at Reefton, he obtained board and lodging to the value of £1 from James Baker Harris, by fraud. Accused pleaded guilty, and said that he had tramped the country from one end to- the other, but had been, unable to obtain employment. The Magistrate pointed out that accused had jiumerons previous convictions, and sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on the third charge, and to one month's imprisonment on each of the other charges, the sentences to be concurrent. George William Dransfield, licensee of the Club Hotel, Blackball (Mr J. W. Hannan), pleaded guilty ■ to ■ selling liqilor after hours on September 27th, j and was fined £5, with 32s 6d costs. James Dunn was charged with dangerously driving a motor-lorry near the Ten Mile on October 10th. He did not appear, and was fined £3 and costs. Malcolm Cameron (Mr W. P. McCarthy) pleaded not guilty to driving an overloaded motor-lorry on the road between Runanga and Granite Creek, on October 13 th. The Traffic Inspector (Mr A. J. Sloss) »aid that hie had weighed the lorry and forind that its weight was 8$ tons, whereas the road maximum was four tons. The Magistrate inflicted a fine of £2, costs 13s, and £ 1 Is solicitor's fee. The Inspector of Mines proceeded against John G.
