With a view to the speed of thoir steamers approximating of their motor vessels, which have already established a reputation for fast passages in the Australian and New Zealand trade, the Commonwealth and Do* minion Line. Ltd.,. have installed the BauerWach system 1 in nine of their steamers, states the "Syren and Shipping/' The results are reported to be highly satisfactory to the owners. Not only is there a saving in the cost of fuel, but the effect of the installation is that each of the vessels has developed about 1000 h.p. extra, and has increased her speed by over one knot—all this by the utilisation of the exhaust steam.. The Port Hardy, one of the vessels to be fitted,—has made the voyage from London to Melbourne in 37 days. The business of shipoV'riing is singular in one respect. - Whatever the state of the industry, the shipowner must for ever be spending in order to keep his vessels up to date, or the keenness of competition will put him behind his rivals. So rapid are the advances in marine propulsion that what is new to-day may be out of date tomorrow, so that the • demands upon his resources and enterprise are insistent. Regarded by hor builder as the finest vessel of the type that he has ever constructed, a new auxiliary schooner, as yet unnamed, was launched from Mr George Niccol's yards recently (states the ' 'New Zealand Herald" ), The vessel is intended for the New Zealand coastal trade, but before entering any regular service will probably make a voyage to Australia. Th® launching was carried out without hitch, the vessel moving easily down the hardwood slips and taking the water per. fectly. Within a few minutes she was'towed to Prince's Wharf, where her two masts were stepped early in the afternoon. The schooner is 130 ft long, with a beam of 26ft 6in, and a draught of Bft. She 'is bin It of. »pecially nicked kauri, somd of the timbers up. in 70ft iff length. She .is .sheathed .:>vith. .;" Hra and her keelsons are of ironba.rk timhJrs "P to 85ft in -length. • The vessel has " Ion"' hold with two hatches, and altoAther will be able to carry ab0ut...350 tons' of cargo. Tho schooner is equipped with . I>iesel engines, each of about 140 horse-mi-er which were installed before she .*• as P : There are two winches and there •2 U Mectrie Nsht throughout. The officers' 'Jm-irtcrs under cover of the poop, deck, are ovrpllentiv fitted out and are exceptionally Ltnodious for the sire of the vessel. Th*\ crew's quart**® are ia the wised foreoaatle.
