Messrs D. Brown, R. L. Fisher, and Lindsay Russell were passengers on yesterday morning's ferry steamer from the north. The Rev. Professor W. Hewitson. of Knox College, Dunedin, was among the passengers on the Maori fro™ Wellington yesterday. Messrs J. P. Vine and T. H. Macky (Auckland), H. Le Gay Holthouse (Wellington), and J. Leggett (Timaru) are among recent arrivals at Warner's Hotel. ' A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr T. ~R. Fleming, an inspector, of schools, was passed by the Canterbury Board of Education at its meeting yesterday. Mr H. Herbert Smith, who has been a patient in Queen Mary 'Hospital, Hanmer Spri'ngß, for the past three weeks, was brought to town on Tuesday. andis now in Lewisham Hospital. Mr P. N. Jeffreys, of Wellington lias been appointed to the "position *of genera] manager of Messrs. G. McClatchie and Company., Limited, and will take up his new duties at an early date. Mr C. S. Harcourtj who was recently admitted a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Coitrt of New Zealand, and who is the elder son of Mr C. J. 8 Harcourt, of Wellington, has left for London, where he will complete his "terras" at the Inner Temple nreparatory to being admitted to the English Bar. Mr M L. Page was elected a Member of the St. Albans Cricket Club at last night's annual meeting of the club. In welcoming him Mr C. S. Thompson (president) referred to the sporting action of Mr Page in joining the St. Albans Club, adding that he would strengthen the club's playing and moral strength , Major A. Armstrong, officer . hi charge -of-the. Solvation Army training farm, Waotu, Putaruru, is retiring from active work, after having completed 39 years' service. During Major Armstrong's regimemany -hundreds of English boys have passed through the Putaruru farm,, in addition to a large number of boys in the home. :, Mr T H. Grenfell, for the past years Christchurch manager of the Goldoerg Advertising Agency,' is severing his connexion with that firm to take up - the position of advertising New Zealand of Mackv, Logan.
