SUMNER ITEMS.

Personal. Mr and Mrs F. Cowliahaw and family, who have been staying in their house in Grafton street, have returned home. Mr and Mrs E. J. Loughnan have returned to thoir home at Glandovey road after a holiday spent at Clifton. Mr and Mrs A. E. Flower (Christ's College) have returned after spending the holidays at their house at Scarborough, Dr. and Mrs A. B. O'Brien and family will return on Monday, after a holiday at their hottse at Sumner. Mr and Mrs B. Ringer (St. Albans) have taken Mr W. E. Best's houso, on the Esplanade, and will shortly go into residence there. Sumner Civic Federation. The Sumner Civic Federation is particularly dosirouß of securing a larger membership. At present six bodies have joined, but there are several othors whose presence in the Federation would materially strengthen it, and whose co-operation 1b greatly desired. Sumner Templars. The weekly meeting of the Sumner Pride Templars was held in the Methodist Sunday School room, Bro. 0. Ford, C.T., presiding. The visitors included Bro. A. Bennie and Sister Mrs Teaguo, son. Bro. Ford reported on :\lrs AleCombs's activities nt the w.C.T.U. convention. The evening was | devoted to games. Bro. Ronnie gave a short talk and made Borne interesting comments on the work of the Temple. Bro. Douglas Hall was congratulated on securing second place for hiß recitation at the Band of Hope competition. Volunteer Fire Brigade. The presentation to Mr James Carter, ex-superintendent of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade, will bo made on Tuesday evening next. The evening will take the form of a smoke concert to which those who have given donations to the presentation, as well as representatives from other fire brigades, have been invited. P.W.M.U. Mrs W. MoAra presided over a good attendance at the meeting of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, held in the Presbyterian Sunday Schoolroom. A letter waß received from Nurse Doull, thanking the branch for money and clothing. A letter of thanks was also received from the Rev. Maurice Frater, of the New Hebrides, for a mission box. A circular letter from Miss Henderson, of Jagadhri, India, was read. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames MoAra and Morten. Athletics. The second annual report to be placed before the annual meeting of the Sumner Athletic Club states that the executive have every satisfaction in the knowledge that the past year had proved successful, both financially and otherwise. The balance-sheet shows a credit of £4 16s, The Sumner colours had usually been well to the fore, and at the end of the season the following places had been gained i—36 firsts, 22 seconds, and 18 thirds, making a total of 01 placings for the season, Points in events were counted for the E, L. H. Brown Cups, and the following were successful:—Ladlds: Miss B. Lindrop, IG points; Mis* 0. Williams', 10 points, runner-up. Junior men: H. McCaikey, 11 points; G. Williams, 12 points, run-ner-up. Senior men: J. Bamford, 15 points; D. Coleman and Murray, 14i points, runners-up. Mr Bamford was to be congratulated on winning the senior cup for the second year in succession. The intor-borough contest had boen held at New Brighton and had re* suited in a win for New Brighton by a few points. At ft scratch inter-club meeting at Ensor's road, arranged by the Canterbury Centre, Sumner had do* feated a strong Technical team by a comfortable margin. A very valuable Club membfer-—Mr A. 10. .ToiAnh—had lert recently for woutn Ainca. mi departure would mean a great loss to the club, and members joined in wishing him every success in his new venture. The committee thanked all those willing helpers whose servloes were so essential at sports meetings, and also those who had given prizes.

Mount Pleasant. The need for a public hall in the Mount Pleasant district has been feU for some time. Meetings concerning matters of vital Importance to the district have been held under cramped conditions in the Tennis Club pavilion, which is totally inadequate. A meeting is to be held, when ways and means of making the necessary arrangements for the Erection of a public hall will be discussed. Rifle Shooting. Membors of the Sumner-ltedolifTa Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club this week completed the competition for Mrs W. H. Nicholson's trophy. The scores wore as follows]— Miss E. Whitfield 70, Miss C. Corser 69, Miss M. Whitfield 68, Miss C. Bamford 64, Miss P. Vaughan 64, Mrs G. Jerard 58, Miss R. Cornwall 66. i the final count thore were three ties for Mrs Nicholson's trophy—Miss C. Corser (3), Miss M. Whitfield (4), and Miss 0. Bamford (7). The shoot-off will take place next week. Miss E. Whitfield won the senior brooch in the weekly competition.
