SUMNER EROSION.

r4 A PROTECTIVE WALL. WORK TO PROCEED. To raise a wall along Sumner beach to protect the adjoining properties from sea erosion, and to repair the outfall drain, the Sumner Borough Council has been authorised to raise a loan of £iOOU. There is also to be a Government subsidy of £2 tor £1 lor the cost of labour, as the wori is to bo done as unemployment reliel work. This announcement, made at last nignt's council meeting, provided an opportunity for councillors to indulge in mutual recriminations. Cr. J. I£. Tait said that he was glad the loan for the erection of a wall on the beach had been granted, and that something was to be done with the outfall at last. Ho said this now in view of the criticism levelled against him at last meeting. He failed to see how the Redcliffs councillors could iustify their support for a loan for any wall for sewer protection being spread over the whole borough when, at the last meeting, they were definitely against the cost of repairs to the drain being spread over the whole borough. Cr. J. Holden: I must object to that. There are no Redcliffs councillors ; we represent the whole of the borough Cr. Tait: My remarks at the last meeting were characterised as childish. but I have the information with mo to prove that the work along the esplanade could be done for £SOO. Cr. P. F. Oldridge: That's a good political speech. Cr. Tait: Every councillor has the right to express his opinion on his feet and I should like to see more of them do it. I object to these armchair recriminations. Cr. H. \V. Harris: Si) long ag Cr. Tait is satisfied with what has been done tliero is nothing more to bo said. Cr. F. H. H. Neville: I think we misrlit receive Cr. Tait's apology. Cr. Tait: It isn't an apology. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson): There is no need for mutual recriminations. We are all trying to do our best for the borough. Cr. Oldridge: It cannot be said that the opposition came from the Redcliffs councillors. Discussion then dropped.
