MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Mr W. F. Cobb, of the Official Assignee's office, Christchurch, has been appointed assistant "clerk at the Ashburton Courthouse, and commenced his duties yesterday. Hospital Board. At the monthly meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday there were present—Messrs A. Horsey (chairman), -W. 'G. Gallagher, W. T. Lill, C. A. Campion, F. Frampton, G. Hardy, W. Bryant, and Dr. J. R. Wells. The medical superintendent (Dr. H. 8. Billcliff) reported that there were 73 patients in hospital at the end of July, and during August 51 males and 41 females were admitted; 165 were treated and 98 discharged, leaving 67 patients in the institution at the end of August. During last month 254 out-patients were treated, and there were 37 X-ray examinations, 60 operations, and 2M massage treatments. The matron (Miss E.J. Watt) reported that Sister Dearsley and Nurse Batchelor were on annual leave. Nurse Cornish was on sick leave. Nurse Taylor had left the staff and had been replaced by Nurse Darrock. The reports from the various maternity homes showed that during last month 12 patients had been admitted to Malvern Home and 15 discharged, leaving four; at Methven, six patients were admitted, 6ix discharged, and two remained; at Eakaia, one patient was admitted and one discharged, and one remained. Nurse A. L. Bead had passed the recent State maternity examination, with honours. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance of £437 0s 4d on July 31st. In addition, there was a subsidy of £590 outstanding, and £326 in Friendly Societies' fees were due. The Hospital Committee reported that the various efforts to secure a house surgeon in New Zealand had not been successful and the Medical School, Dunedin, had advised that it was problematical whether the demands of smaller hospitals could be met after the next examination. In connexion with this matter the Dean of the Medical Faculty of Adelaide University advised that Dr. Horgan was available for the position ""of hous surgeon at the Ashburton Hospital. It was decided to engage Dr. Horgan for fifteen months at a commencing salary of £3OO per annum. It was reported that the Minister for Health had approved of the appointment of Miss Patterson, as matron of the Rakaia Maternity Home, and she had taken up her duties on, September. Ist. The Canterbury • Westland - Marlborough Division of the British Empire Cancer Research Campaign Society wrote acknowledging the Ashburton county's final contribution (which made the total raised in the county £2019 4s lid), and commending Ashburton contributors for their effort. Rugby Union. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, Mr S. H. Sullivan presiding. The New Zealand Rugby Union advised that E. Roebuck, of Taranaki, had been disqualified and Warned offall Rugby grounds, for life, for striking a referee, rendering him \inconscious, and for using foul language. The following stock were slaughtered at the Ashburton abattoir last month: — Cattle 119, sheep 695, calves 2, pigs 78 (1 condemned). j RAKAIA. The Rev. Mr Barnett, of the ChatI ham Islands, and formerly of Tinwajd, I has been appointed vicar of Rakaia, [ and will commence duty there early in November. I On Saturday evening in St. Mark s [Schoolroom a well attended social was held by the Ladies' Guild. Competitions were won by Mrs Tatterson and Mr L. E Street, and a consolation prize was awarded to Miss Margaret Turton. Music for the dance was supplied by Messrs T. Lawler and L. Keane, and extras were played by Mr J'. Lawler. ' There was a good attendance at tne fortnightly social of the Te Pirita School Committee on Friday evening, and a very enjoyable time was spent. Competitions were won by Misses, yand E. Letters were received from the Geraldine Borough and County Councils, and the Temuka and Geraldine A. and V. Association according hearty support to the endeavour that is being made to establish an Agricultural High School in Geraldine, .
