GOODS IN LIEU OF RENT.
OWNER AND TENANT IN COURT. (rr.5533 ASSOCIATION TfcLEGHAM.; WELLINGTON, September S. Because Edward Rov O'Connor, proprietor of the Alaska Fur Depot, was in arrears for the rent of a garage, the owner, Mrs L. E. Wilson, widow, of Petone, walked into his shop in Willis street *nd selected a fur coat and fur to what she believed was the equivalent value. After a struggle with Mrs O'Connor she left the shop wearing Ihe articles. Several furs were also taken from the garage. These allegations were made and admitted in a civil action heard before Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Claims and counterclaims for varying amounts were the basis of the action. Mrs Wilson admitted taking the coat, which the O'Connors said belonged to another person. Mrs O'Connor said she showed it to Mrs Wilson as a sample. It was held by the O'Connors that the fur skins taken from the garage were returned short. Counsel for Mrs Wilson ,->aid that his client was owed d£4G 10s rent. She had agreed to return tho coat and the fur skins, which she took to compel O'Connor to pay the rent. lie had been told he would be ejected unless he paid, and he gave a cheque for £3, which was dishonoured. The Magistrate, who said he would give his decision on Wednesday morning, ordered the return of tho coat and fur.
