MEMORIAL HUT.
TASMAN GLACIER TRAGEDY. RECOGNITION OP GUIDE BLOMFIELD'S HEROISM. i The building of a memorial hut at De la Bet-he corner on the Tasman Glacier, in memory of Guide E. Blomfield, who, with a party of girls, lost his life there on January 19th last, has been contemplated for some time by the New Zealand Alpine Club, and a considerable sum of money has already been raised for that purpose. Kepresentatives of various winter sports bodies in Christchurch met yestcday to discuss means of raising money in Christchurch to supplement that already collected. Air K. Twyneham, who was in the chair, stated that steps had already been taken towards erecting some memorial to Guide Blomfield, and it was considered that the site of De la Beche bivouac would be a suitable place for the erection of a hut. People interested in allied sports were being asked to combine in an effort to raise the necessary funds, and the idea of holding an Alpine evening in Christchurch had occurred. The hut would serve not only as a memorial, but would be of practical assistance to many people who could use it as a base for climbing expeditions to the surrounding peaks. At an alpine evening, slides of the Alps could be shown, and, reminiscences of famous early climbers could be given in short lectures. Mr A. J. Scott said that the hut would cost from £3OO to £4OO to erect, and it had been suggested that it should comprise two rooms, with half a dozen bunks. He moved that an alpine evening be held at a date in October, to be decided on by a subcommittee This was agreed to, and the follow ing committee was appointed to make arrangements: Messrs Twyneham, Scott, W. A. Kennedy, and Dr. F. V Bevan Brown The names of Dr. E. Teichelmann, Messrs A. P. Harper, G. E. Mannering. and \V. A. Kennedy were mentioned as men who would be asked to give lantern talks on that occasion. The following attended the meeting: Miss D. Lewis. ' Dr. F. V. Bevan Brown. Messrs R. Twyneham, R. Booth, G. Fairhuret. C. Hilgendorf. C. Buchanan. A. J. Scott W. A. Kennedy, J. G D. Ward, W Macbeth, and the Rev Owen Williams
