CHALLENGE SHIELD MATCH CANTERBURY DEFEAT POVERTY BAY. The third and fiftal challenge Shield match was played at Lancaster Parle on Saturday between Canterbury (holder*) and Poverty Bay (challengers). The challenging Association held the Norden Cup for throe successive season*, and were promoted to the rank at a major Association. Last year the Poverty Bay representatives met Wellington, and were defeated by four goal* to two. This season's team are « much stronger aide, an d were confident of their ability to defeat the holders. The game waa fast and even, the visitors being clever exponents of stick-play. The first spell ended with no score. la the second apell play bright and full of interest, and up till three minutes to time there was no score. Canterbury gained a succession of penalty corners, and S. Bell was successful in notching the only goal of the match. The following team* took tb* Bay (Bine)— Goal, B. Moore; backs, B. The match was played on the west ground at Lancaster Park, commencing at 1.30 p.m. The rain in the morning made the ground slippery, but the surface Was true and level. Canterbury won the toss and played with tho wind. The visitors set off at a jrreat pace, flud soon Wd the loc&l b&c.ks hard at work. Dash stopped . this visitors rush and sent Davlea away, but the ball went out at the visitors' twenty-flve. Canterbury set up a determined attack but the BJue backs were Bafe. Shortly after the local forwards broke through, but the visitors' .goalie proved sound. Hale and McKay headed a promising rush for Poverty Bay, but C. Rogers cleared well upfield. The visitors left wing got well away and some pretty forward play ended in a corner for the Bay. _ Breaches by the local forwards gave the yisitors a succession of corners, but none was successful The Bed and Black forward* went well down but lost a chance through offside play. Canterbury camo again, but Moore and Turbitt set up a solid defence. Jones, McKay, and Eraser were prominent in a clever passing rush by the visitors, but a breach gave relief. Burke headed a local attack, _ giving Fullwood a chance, but Moore was again safe, Jones broke away on the Bay left and centred nicely, bnt B. Bogera cut in and relieved, A right wing attack by Thompson saw the visitors in a promising position until 0. Rogers cleared the danger. The visitors camo back and gained a penalty corner, which was relieved by C. Hore. The Canterbury forwards were bitting too bard, and Scholium and Turbitt cleared time and again. McKay led the Blue forwards, supported by Hole, but Dash and 0. Bogera sent play back to midfield. B. Rogers intercepted a Bay rush and set Canterbury moving, but Moore, who was playing brilliantly, saved the side, and half-time came with no score. On resuming the Bine forwards got moving, and a miss by C, Hore let Jones away, and a neat centre gave' Hole a' chance, but Snooks came out and McKay was penalised for obstruction, the free bit relieving Canterbury. C. Hore and Neate we're prominent in a solid rush by the local, forwards, and Neate had a shot from an acute angle, which Turbitt deflected at the last moment, H Hore sent the Canterbury forwards away by pretty stick play, and obstruction gave Canterbury a free hit just outside the visitors' circle, but the circle was cleared by Turbitt. The Blue forwards broke away, Jones showing clever stick work on the left win£, and Canterbury's goal was in danger. Hale had a couple of shots which narrowly missed. Clever defence by C. Rogers relieved the pressure for Canterbury and Neate went wall down and had an unsuccessful shot. Canterbury were now having the better of the game, and gained several penalty corners, but solid defence kept the visitors' goal intact. Burke and were instrumental in placing, the local side in a favourable position, and Burke sent in a hot shot, which Mnpre stopped cleverly. Poverty Bay were led in a fast combined rush by Jones, who was stopped by E. Dash, and S. Bell gained possession and opened op a bright attack for Canterbury, which ended In a penalty corner, from which S. Bell scored the only goal of the match, Canterbury 1. Poverty Bay 0. With only three minutes to go both teams put- plenty of life into their play. The visitors swept down and only solid play by tho Rogers brothers and Dash kept the goal clear. - Play was finally transferred to the Visitors' end and the final whistle blew with the *core: Canterbury 1, Poverty Bay 0. Teams Entertained. On Saturday evening the visiting team and the local players and representatives of the Now Zealand Hockey Association were the guests of the Canterbury Hockey Association at a complimentary dinner, the president of

the Canterbury Association presiding. As tha visiting team left by the ferry the toast list waa brief, and after tba toast of "The King" the chairman complimented the Poverty Bay team upon its sterling same, ana stated that, on behalf of the Canterbury Association. be wished to thank th« players for the clean, sporting spirit shofrn throughout. The toast of the visitors was proposed by tha captain of the Canterbury team (Mr 8. Ball),' who expressed surprise at tha hard fight pat up by such a young team. Ha also congratulated the team npon Its performance, and expressed a desire to meet then again next season. In reply, Mr Thompson, captain of the visiting team, . agreed that the game had been keenly and cleanly fought. He stated that the visitors had expected to win, but admitted that Canterbury possessed more experience, ,*nd that no doubt the trip would be of value to the game in Poverty Bay. Mr G; File, manager of the Poverty Bay team, expressed appreciation of the hospitality extended to the team during its short visit also to the secretary of tha New Zealand Hockey Association (Mr W. H. Down) for the assistance rendered in connexion with the trip. Mr H. S. J. Goodman, president of tbe New Zealand Hockey Association, expressed the Association's pleasure at meeting the Poverty Bay Association team on its first visit to tbe South Island. In reviewing the game, he congratulated the visitors on their display, and expressed tbe opinion that several of the members, notably B. Moore, J. Turbitt, and E, Jones were entitled to con* sideration when the New Zealand team was selected to tour Australia next season. .Lower Grade Matches. .FIFTH GRADE. Final. The ladies' Senior A and Senior B trial matches aet down to be played on Saturday afternoon were abandoned on account of the rain. The Senior A trial will be played at North Pork this afternoon, and tha B trial at Hospital Corner this afternoon, both games commencing at 5 p.m.
