OBITUARY.

DR FRANCIS FORBES. The death occurred at his residence at Opotiki last week of Dr. Francis Courtney Sutherland Forbes. Dr. Forbe3 was born in India in 1867, and was the second son of the late Colonel Walter Forbes, of the Bengal Staff Corps. He was educated in England ana qualified as a medical practitioner at the age of 21. He came to New Zealand when 22 years old, as house surgeon at the Auckland Hospital. After, being some time in Auckland Dr. Forbes engaged in practice at Paeroa, from which place he left with the Expeditionary Force for the irouth African War. At the end of the war he went to England for a further medical course. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed medical superintendent of the Mangonui Hospital, and later went to Opotiki, where, in'l9l6, he was appointed medical superintendent at the local hospital. He held this position until failing health caused him to resign about three years ago. Dr. Forbes was a keen sportsman and a well-known authority on stud stock. MR W. R. MAY. The death occurred at St. Albans last week of Mr William Richard May, late of Richmond, Nelson, aged 79 years. Mr May was well known throughout the .Nelson district, as a result of bis l° ll ß association with his Richmond business, W. R. May and Co., aud his prominent connexion with the Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Born in London in 1851, Mr May was educated at a military college in that city, and came to New Zealand in 1867, when he received an appointment at Kaiapoi with Mr John Beharrell, merchant, with whom he remained for seven years. He then purchased tho business from its owner, and successfully conducted it till he sold out and removed to Richmond in 1891. While in Kaiapoi Mr May was for a number of years a member of the Borough Council, and of the Harbour Board and Licensing Bench. The Richmond business, which has borne the name of May for the last forty years, was established in 1857, by Mr William Dartnell, who was succeeded by Messrs Hodder and Talbot, and then in 1891 it was taken over by Mr May, who ran it until twelve years ago, when he retired, and the business became a Limited Company. A keen and enterprising business man, in 1900 M.May established a ham and bacon curing factory and butter factory at Richmond, industries then entirely new to the Nelson district. Mr May displayed much interest in agricultural and pastoral affairs, and was one of the principal founders of th? Nelson A. and P. Association, with which body he had been closely connected f?nce its inception. Up to his death, Mr May attended every toieeting of the Nelson Association, and during the last twelve years since his transference to Christchurch he had made an annua! visit to Nelson each November for thp Association's fixture. It was mainly through his efforts that the Richmond Park, the very fine property of the Association, was purchased. Mr May was pro-deceased by Mrs May, who died last year. lie leaves one Fon and one daughter—Mr W. 11. May, of Richmond, and Mrs M. Croucher, of Christchurch. MR M. C. The death is announced of Mr William Scott Fell, a merchant, and manag-ing-director of the Inter-State Steamships, Limited, and a former member of the Legislative Assembly of New South Walee. He was a prominent figure in ttw patriotic movement. He was 64 years of age. SIR JAMES GUTHRIE. (Received September 7th ; 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 6. The death has occurred of Sir James Guthrie. [James Guthrie was born in 1859, and was educated at Glasgow High School and University. He had a distinguished career as an artist and held many prominent positions in the art world. He was awarded LL.I>., Glasgow University 1906, Edinburgh 1913, St. Andrew's 1922, and was knighted in 1903.]
