Cruickshanks partly cleared, and a quick return by Dryden nearly caught Mitchell, in goal, napping. In spite of the heavy ground play continued to ba fast, with each side alternately attacking and defending. At half-time there was no score. The second half opened smartly. Brighton made a forward movo, but an intercepted pass by Dryden sent them back. Good work by Cullen, Hulmo, and Shaw carried play to the Brighton end, but St. Albans lacked an efficient marksman at the business end. At this stage St. Albans were showing some mastery over tho seasiders, but the shooting continued to he weak. Just inside half-way from the Brighton end Bunt dropped in a long-range shot. Mitchell jumped for the hall and turned it out for a good save. Play swung to the other end, with Allen, Sipith, and Gordon putting in good work. A concurted rush took the ball to the St. Albans goal, and from the ruck Smith booted in. New Brighton 1, St. Albans 0. Following l'lay was fast, with Brighton now moro in the picture. From a corner to New Brighton Hulma placed well. Smith snapped up and put New Brighton two goals up at short range. St. Albans battled hard to retrieve the day, but failed to get past the Brighton defences, and the game ended with score: New Brighton 2, St. Albans 0. •Mr Hosley was referee. Following an exhibition of really good football, tlie best Been in Wellington this season,' Petone, tho North Island finalists, defeated Western (Canterbury), South Island finalists, by the best of three goals. Western played against the wind in the first spell, but Petone had the worst experience playing in the second epell against banding southerly rain. Both sides were extremely fit and played sound football under adverse conditions with little to choose between them on merit, and the winning goal might well have gone either way. The Southerners were faster but Petone were £icady and their defence was very sound. A high curling shot by Craig, the Petone left winger, gave Petone the lead in the fir£t half. The suns was faßt and hard in the second spell. When Falloon broke through in an attack on the Petone goal, McTean, the Petone goalie, ran out and scleral players clashed. As the whistle went for dangerous play on the part of a Western playor, Falloon shot and netted but the goal was disallowed.
