THE VAGRANCY PROBLEM.
TO THB EDITOB 0» THX PBISS Sir,—lt seems an opportune time to protest against the methods employed by the authorities in.dealing with the problem of vagrancy. It is not unusual for Magistrates to order a wrong-doer out of town to the country, where we are
practicably unprotected from such, characters. If. an undesirable arrives at a ' township, where the womenfolk have reasonable .protection, the local constable orders him to the open road, which means ho invariably linds his way to remote districts.- Is this fair to: the farmer's wife, when there "are other ways of dealing with such people? — Yours, etc., MID-CANTERBURY. .
