NAVY AND VICTORIA LEAGUES.

ESSAY COMPETITIONS. The conditions and subjects for essay competitions, open to pupils of secondary schools in Canterbury and Westland, which are being held by the Navy League and the Victoria League in conjunction have been issued. "Discuss the effect of th© recent Naval Treaty upon the British Navy and the Empire," is the subject of the essay for boys and girls over fifteen years, and "The advantages of trade within the Empire," for boys and girls under fifteen years. Liberal prizes are being offered, and th© school winning first prize in the "over fifteen" essay will receive a special challenge cup, presented by Mr J. J. Dougall. _ The combined Leagues also intend to award 'certificates for essays written by pupils in Standards VI. and V. of Primary schools in Canterbury and Westland. The subjects may be either "What wireless has done for th© world/' or "Why are wo proud of our British sailors, past and present?"
