KUGBY UNION. NEW SHIELD-HOLDERS. MATCH AGAINST CANTERBURY. Fresh from their victory over Southland in the Ranfurly Shield match at Invercargill on Wednesday, the Wellington 1 Rugby team will, in all probability, meet a sterner oppo sition at Lancaster Pork thfs afternoon, when they will play Canterbury. The trophy itself will not be at stake. Unfortunately, Canterbury have lost their opportunity of p'aying for the Shield thiß season, but this afternoon they have a chance to prove to followers of Rugby football that theirs might have been a formidable bid for it. It is unfortunate that the public will not be able to see U- -porter and A, E. Cooke iu action again, but in the fifteen selected to do battle for Wellington Canterbury will be meeting a side which has proved ita ability to play football of the highest class, and is very keen to finish the season with an unbeaten record. Only one pliiycr iu the team, Mark Mcholls, the captain, is over 25 years of age, and the majority possess quite an exceptional turn of speed. in addition to Nicholls, there are several members of the team who need no introduc tj ou —j,\ D. Kilby, L. K. Heaxlowood, mid D. Ollivcr, to mention only three—while the big forwards, H. McLean, K. Reid, A. C. Mcl'herson, and the others, will see that Toby RobinßOii. A. 1. Cottrell, Ron. Btewart, and their colleagues have plenty to do. Not much criticism of the Canterbury selectors' choice has been voiced, and in the Ked and Black fifteen will be reposed the confidence of thousands of enthusiasts. In his last game, 'lt. A. Fulton gave a display which proved that he was equal to sucl. a task as that of full-back for Canterbury, and in the three-quarters, G. F. Hart, H. Lilburne, and C. Oliver, the province is repre sented by three players who have all taken their place in New Zealand sides. The Mullan-Hay-Innes combination closer in looks formidable, while the forwards are an outstanding set. r The Wellington team is as follows: — Full-back: h. K. Heailewood Three-quarters: D. OUiver N.
