CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. A special general meeting o£ members of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held last night, Mr Norton Francis presiding. The business was the consideration o£ proposed alterations to the regulations to create the office of immediate past president, who will be, ex officio, a member of the council of the Chamber for the year following his term ot office as president without the necessity for election, or other appointment. Mr Ai O. Wilkinson moved, and Mr C P. Agar seconded, the adoption of the motion giving effect to the proposed amendment. •. v Mr F W. Hobbs urged-thai provision should be made for" a second vice-, president, in order to encourage the younger members to take part in pubilC>The chairman said "that Mr Hobbs'sfugeestxon had been discussed by the council, which had not been in favour of it. Personally, he did not think either necessary or desirable. The motion was agreed to, - A meeting of the -Council- was then held. Present : Messrs Norton Francis (chairman), A. O. Uoy Smith (secretary). the Auckland Chamber forwarded acopy of a letter, addressed to the Prime Minister, . regarding the representations made to him to raise the require- - ments of the New Zealand tariff for preference for British goods from 50 per cent, to 75 per pent. The Auckland Chamber was unanimously op-, posed to any alteration, believing that, the suggested amendment, if agreed to, would strike a very severe olow to British industry. On the motion of Mr Agar, seconded by Mr Wyles, it was decided to suggest to the Auckland Chamber that, as an important phase of business policy was involved, the Auckland Chamber should forward a remit on the subject to the conference of Associated Chambers of Commerce. The chairman referred to the improvements made recently in telephonic communication between Christchurch and Dunedin, and Greymouth, and on his motion it was decided to congratulate the Telephone Department on the progress made.
