UNEMPLOYED AND WATER RACE CLEANING.

When 1 the' Malvern County Council recently submitted to tender the work of cleaning the watsr races in the' area under "its control, the.Organised Unemployed and Relief Workers' Committee was invited to compete for the contracts. ■

two men made aif inspection of the water races on behall of the committee, viewing, lengths totalling over 20 miles. Tenders were subsequently submitted for five of the six contracts, on which work is to be commenced on Monday. Competition for the work was particularly keen.

The average price per chain submitted by the committee was about Is 4}d. Later the County Council advised the committee that its .tenders for contracts Nos. 5. and 6 were the lowest, and asked for its acceptance. These contracts are in" the Greendale-Home-bush districts, and will employ about ten men.

Since the receipt of the County Council's letter, however, the committee has decided not to accept the work. "We have to advise you that when tendering we took into consideration the fact that there was approximately 31 miles of race to be cleaned," stated a reply sent to the Council yesterday, "and in consequence tendered on the law of average with a' view of placing about ten married, men in temporary employment. "You will readily acre© that it would riot be advantageous to send married men out to the extreme end of Darfield for two and a half miles of contract at Is per chain." Mr H. E. Barnslev. organiser for the committee, who showed a copy of this letter to a reporter -estordny. said that the contracts for which the Countv Connc'l hnd offered to »»c o ept the prices tendered by the unemployed, were thase for which the wages would be the lowest.
