In his sworn statement bankrupt said he commenced business as a sawmilling contractor in October, 1920, his assets comprising £6OO. He had paid £SOO down. He had paid his way until the winter of 1926, when he had had to give up work on account of illness, and had not been able to work since. He had to pay a man to take his place, entailing considerable expense. He was convalescing at Hanmer for three months. Although he was losing ground financially, he kept the'plant going in the hope of regaining his health. The 1929 season turned out satisfactorily, but the next season was disastrous. Two creditors issued distress warrants against him, and he had no alternative but to file. He believed there was a

prospect of a sale for the plant. He could not find anyone to finance him to carry on. He was a married man with five children, and he had no prospects. In answer to questions, bankrupt said that the motor-car which he used was the property of his wife. To Mr Kussell bankrupt said that his wife had lent him £IOO on the first car, and this sum was all that was paid down on the second. His wife also paid some of his debts, totalling £126. lie owed so much for wages, because his employees had not "lifted" their money regularly. Bankrupt said that his combine was burnt about two months ago, and the £370 received in insurance was paid into the bank. He had put his plant and house property on the market for sale and had hoped to avoid bankruptcy if either had been sold. The winding up of the estate was left to tho Assignee, Mr M. C. Knox being requested to advise upon the value and working of the plant.
