LICENSING COMMITTEE. The quarterly meeting of the. Lyttelton Licensing Committee was set down for yesterday, but as there was no business to put before the committee, the meeting was not held. * Building Society. A special meeting of the Lyttelton. Permanent Land, Building, and Investment Society was held in the Society's rooms on Tuesday night, Mr P. Hobbs presiding. For two vacancies on the committee, three nominations, those of Messrs H. H. Barnard, W. Mitchell, and J. Payne, were received. The annual-j meeting was fixed for Thursday next.' Lodge Meeting. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal City of Norwich Lodge was held on Tuesday, N.G. Bro. A. A. KayeS presiding. For being unlawfully on licensed premises John Meade was convicted and fined £l, and costs 10s. John Arneil for being found on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order was convicted and fined £1 i-tnd costs 10s. For procuring liquor he was ordered to pay costs 10s. For being found on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order William Lov§ was convicted and fined 10s and costs 10s. ' Ernest Hammill pleaded not guilty to being on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order, and further, to having procured liquor duiv ing the currency of such order; The evidence showed that owing to a clerical error, in the notices issued to the hotel-, keepers, defendant was under the impression that his order had expired five days before the offence was committed. The Magistrate said defendant would receive the benefit of the error and the charge would be dismissed as trivial under Section 92 of the Justices-of the Peace Act. Golf. The Diamond Harbour Ladies' Golf Club will play a-sealed handicap match on Sunday for a trophy presented by Mrs A. White-Parsons.. An* inter-club match between teams representing the Lyttelton Ladies' Club and the Bichmond Hill Ladies' Club, Sumner, will be played at Charteris Bay to-day. An unofficial men's match, between teams representing the Hagley Club and the Lyttelton Club, will also be played at Charteris Bay to-day. Heavy Fine for False Alarm. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday a young man who pleaded guilty to having. given a false alarm of fire, was fined £25. John Bichard Huston, aged 26 years was charged under the Fire Brigades A.ct of 1926, with having given a false alarm of fire. He did not appear, but was represented by Mr A. W. Smithson, who entered a . plea, of guilty. Sergeant W. H. Dunlop said that on August 14th a false alarm had been given at 11.20 p.m. from the switchbutton outside the fire station in Oxford street.
