BOY ARRESTED.

ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. (r&Mfl AMOCLUIOS TXLZOBIM.) HAWERA. September 1. A boy, 15 years of age, who was subsequently arrested, exploited hi® knowledge of local conditions to work a confidence trick at Hawera on Saturday. Aware that Hawora railwav station booking office clerks frequently obtained small change from confectioner's shop opposite the station, tne boy obtained £3 from a woman shop; keeper on the pretext that his unco in the booking offioe wanted £3 ia sixpences and threepences The request was not unusual. In exchang for the silver, the boy Baid • his "uncle" would bring the money to the shop later, as ho was busy at tne moment. Shortly after receiving the monev the boy, returned with Is 6d, stating his "uncle" was returning it as it was in excess of the correct change. The shopkeeper subsequently enquired at the booking office, and found that no boy had been sent tor the shopkeeper's description, the railway clerk recognised the boy as having bought a ticket for New Plymouth, paying m sixpences ana threepences, with a result that the boy was arrested at Stratford. With the exception of the amount paid for the ticket, the Is 6d returned to the shop, and 9d spent in sweets, the whole of the money was in his possession.
