GISBORNE AIRPORT.
QUESTION OP SUBSIDY. (PBBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGEAM.I GISBORNE, August 30. Concern has been caused by the announcement that the unemployment subsidy is not available for the airport scheme commenced some weeks ago in anticipation of the granting of the subsidy. The position now is that seventy-five men with an aggregate of 350 dependents will have to be dismissed'unless the Minister consents to reoonsider the position. Until the commencement of the airport work, the unemployment situation was acute and if a suspension is forced now, the acuteness will bo re-estab-lished. The Mayor is endeavouring to secure the Minister's assent to the' treatment of the work as a relief job, a strong point in the representations being that every penny expended is for wages.
