CUSTOMS RETURNS.

C+itISTCHURCH FIGURES. There was nu increase in net Customs duties collected in Christchurch last month of £6320, as compared with August, 19-9, aud of £34,082, as compared with July,. 1930. Some o£ the increase over July, 1930, probably is due to increased duties, although it has to be borne in mind that the amount' co'.lcc'ted in July this year was £45,940 less than in July, 1929, due to fewer oversea vessels arriving at Lyttejton in July o£ this year. Tor the calendar year, so far, there is a decrease thi.s year, as compared with 1929, of £51,525; and a decrease in tho financial year, so far, of £55,197, The motor spirit tax receipts show an increase of £2513, as compared with August, 1929, but a decrease of £3247 as compared with Jiily, 1930. For tho calendar year, go far, an increase is shown of £1597, and for the financial year, £2799. The tyre tax shows an increase of £240 over July of this year; but a decrease in the calendar year of £2842, and in tho financial year of X2C97. Details follow;

WELLINGTON. (fsesi association tileqrau.) , WELLINGTON, August 31. The Customs duty collected at Port Wellington during tho present month -was over £10,600 in. excess of the total for August, 1923. AJI round increases were also recorded in respect of the beer duty, tyre tax, and petrol tax. The brief cabled announcement was mads in Saturday's Press that the directors of the Bank of Australasia, had declared an interim dividend at the rate of.j4 per cent. The dividend, which is free of insome lax, is tile same a« last year, and equals 7s per share. The dividend is payable on October 3rd. Th© New Zealand list of shareholders will be closed on September Bth for the I'ttrpose of the dividend. The dividend since 1923 has been at the rate of 14 j'-er cent, lu 1925 it was 13 per cent. The net profit of the bank in 102!) was £677,163,' the amount represented in the year's dividends £630,000, and the amount placed to reserves £47,183, which then totalled £1,036,943.
