NEW OVERSEAS COMMISSIONER. i i CTBOU OUI OWK COBRISPONDEJCT.) LONDON, July 3. Lieutenant-Colonel J. L. Sleeman, of Hampton Bishop, near Hereford, has been appointed Chief Commissioner, of the St. John Ambulance Brigades overseas, which entails command of the brigades in India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, British Columbia, Ceylon, Burma, Hong Kong, South, East and West Africa, Rhodesia, Bermuda, Malta and Gibraltar. The Colonel's new duties will necessitate him shortly entering upon a tout of the world. He is widely travelled and knows intimately several of the countries which he w*ll have to visit. In announcing the appointment, H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught, who is the Grand Prior of the Venerable Order of St. John" of Jerusalem, said that Colonel Sleeman was selected because of his extensive knowledge of ; tndia and the distant parts of the Empire. The new Chief Commissioner has had a distinguished military career, and is the inventor of the entrenching tool which wits a valuable part of the equipment of tho British Army during the war.
