CONDUCT OF CYCLISTS.

A f MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT. "Cyclists seem to honour the rules of the road more in the breach than in the' observance," said Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when Edward Wildey pleaded guilty to a charge of failing, to comply with the directions of a traffic inspector. The Magistrate said he had watched traffic passing,, and many cyclists simply disregarded everything and went straight ahead. "When- did the prosecutions start? The rules seemed to be honoured more in the breach than in the observance.

The Chief Traffic Inspector (Mr H. Macintosh) said that it was about fiftyfifty. There was only one man on point duty at each intersection. The Magistrate: That is so. There is no means of identifying the offenders. Mr Macintosh said that a "roundup';' had been held once, and it was found necessary to have four .inspectors at the intersection for the cyclists came froip four directions. The Magistrate said that some cycl-\ ists .observed, the rules and signals well, but others cut in .front of cars that had been, signalled forward, and crossed in front of trains. Mr Macintosh said he/ hoped to do better-when the signals were installed. "This young fellow is lucky to be here to-day,he; added. . -

The Magistrate: Many others are lucky, too. The defendant said that he would have been knocked down if he had stopped. He was not quite 17." The Magistrate: : You are lucky to be here. You will be fined 5s and costs. It will cost, yon 15s altogether.
