GERMAN STEAMER SINKS.
PASSENGERS AND CREW RESCUED. (U&nU> FSIBS ASSOCMTIOM-S* ILUCTEIO TSLSOBAPH—COPTBIOHT.) LONDON, July 18. The owners have been advised that the steamer Targis went on fire in mid-Atlantic, east of Bermuda. The Rangitata rescued the whole of the passengers and crew. The Rangitata, homeward bound from New Zealand, sighted the German steamer on fire in three holds, coal bunkers, engine room, and boiler room. She hastened to the rescue and stood by, at the captain's request, until the Targis filled and sank. [The Targis was a steel-screw steamer of 5952 tons gross register, built in 1915 for the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line. Her principal dimensions were: Length 428.9 ft, breadth 55ft, depth.29ft.]
