ADMISSION OF PEERESSES PROPOSED. MOTION DEFEATED, (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION— BT ELECTRIC TELEGBAPH—COPTEIaBT.) (Received July 17th. 10.2Q p.m.) LONDON, July 16. Tn the House of Lords, Lord Astor moved: "That in view of the full enfranchisement of women and their admission to the House of Commons and to Cabinet, this House should welcome the admission of peeresses to the House of Lords on an equality with men." Lord Hanworfch o«oosed the rnotion. He said that it would only add tq the confusion and would prevent re?* 1 reform. Lord Buekmaster said that there wns rip adequate reason why twenty peeresses in the r own right should not' artieipate in the proceedings Reform of the Chamber was only attainable one step at a time. The admission of women would be a good first step. Lord Birkenhead said that there would be reform pf the Chamber some day. and when it came the most sanguine could n ot hope to exclude women, \n the meantime he hoped that they would reject the motion, which was defeated by 53 to 49 votes.
