Hyland, of Christchurch, is in charge of the Ashburton Police Station, in the absence of Senior-Sergeant H. Martin, who is on annual leave. Improvements in Asaburton. With the idea of coming to some uniform agreement with regard to the type, of fence to bo erected along the Wills street frontage to the Domain, deputations from the Borough Council and Advance Ashburton Association met at the site yesterday morning. Mr M. J. Burgess (A.A.A.) said that he would like to see a low fence or none at all. In all probability the surrouading area would bo laid out in the near futvre, and a low fence would then bo more suitable. After further discussion the Mayor (Mr E. Galbraith) said that the Council would reconsider the matter at its next meeting, and the architect could then draw up fresh plans. It is the general opinion that a f enoe 2ft 6in in height would meet with approval. Mr A. H. Todd (A.A.A.) asked the Council's ruling on the proposal to erect an entrance gate to Baring square east, from East street. This question had been the subject of much discussion by both bodies for some timo paßt. Mr Burgess said that many people did not know where the present entrance was. Mr Collins did not favour a new entrance, as he stated that people would be inclined to cut through the Square, instead of using East street, and tracks would ultimately be made across the lawns. The Mayor stated that the now entrance would not be entertained by the Council. It would do away with the present privacy of the Square. Mr Burgess: Is this what you call progress f The Mayor: Take out the whole fence and I will be with you. A voice: You would not let us take the whole fence out.
