By "Flagstick."

The Bussley ladies will have an extra trophy to compete for this year. This is the Clark Challenge Bowl, which has been presented by one of the original members of the club, E. H. Clark. The competition for the trophy, which will commence shortly, is by match play on the difference of bogey handicaps, and is restricted to members with a handicap of 18 or under. Besides being a very acceptable addition to the prize list, the new trophy will serve a useful purpose in stimulating players with handicaps in the twenties to reduce —in tho golfing sense —before the competition for it begins.

Just now the Harewood course is playing extremely well, and players find themselves carrying spoon and No. 1 iron to little purpose, since their driver can be used so often for the second shot. Another feature of the course is that it is playable with comfort after the heaviest rain. The semi-final for the Blank Cup has still to be decided, two players, A. K. Blank and C. J. MeFadden, having already played two games without a decision. Blank, conceding 12 strokes, might well have thought his prospect of reaching the final a rosy one when at their first meeting he reached the 16th dormy. MeFadden, however, finished brilliantly in 4, 5, 3, and, receiving a stroke at each hole, squared tho match. When the two met again last week-end MeFadden was one down playing the 16th, but with his strokes took both that hole and the long 17th in fours, Blank's "birdio" 4 at the latter not being good enough. The latter made no mistake at the 18th, however, and the match was again squared. The winner has to meet B. G. Thomson, the present club champion, and winner of the Ward Cup, in the final.

B. T. Tosswill, who plays on the 1 mark at Shirley, has recently joined tho club, and when available will be a valuable accession to the clnb's pjaying strength.

The Bichmond Hill teams have done well in their club matches of late, following up a victory over a strong Ashburton team by defeating a Bussley team on their own links by 10J games to 7J. "Local knowledge" no doubt contributed largely to tho earlier victory, for Richmond Hill is a course that takeß some learning, but the same cannot bo eaid of the Eussley match, which was played in a fog so thick that the visitors had to depend on the home team for guidance as to line and distance. As soon as thoy had reached to within a 50-yard radius from tho flag they were at no disadvantage, for there are practically no concealed hazards round the Eussley greens, and

the putting surfaces were delightfully true and even iu pace.

Framers of club programmes who omit to include in tho season's "fare" a due proportion of such events as the above are doing disservice to their fellow-members in at least two ways. They are withholding from them what is probably the strongest of all incentives to improvement —the desire to win a place in the team, and are depriving them of one of the most enjoyable experiences tho game has to offer. Does not the golfer treasure, as among his happiest experiences, the memory of a day's outing, by car, by train, or, as in bygone days, by coach (most delightful of all), the little fuss of welcome by the hosts, the strenuous, if friendly, contest wherever new and fresh problems are to be solved, the "goodly fellowship" round the 19th hole with its babble of talk, which will be renewed at intervals on the homeward, somewhat somnolent, journey', as each of the party mills over the day's happenings and shares his impressions with the others? As a last word, surely some of these fixtures might be reserved for Saturdays. "Changes are lightsome" is a saying that applies as truly to the older and perhaps less enthusiastic members of a club as to the younger and more vigorous.

H. K, Sellers, who has been a member of the Hagley Club, both at Hagley and at Russley, for many years, was not allowed to leave his old "stamping ground" without some expression of his club-mates' appreciation of his sportsmanlike qualities. This was conveyed to Mr Sellers, and incidentally a similar message to Mrs Sellers by T. W. Reese, who as captain of the Hagley Club, and secretary of the Hagley "Lambs," presented the departing member with a pipe and tobacco pouch on behalf of the rest of the "flock," wishing him all possible suecess in his new sphere, and thanking him for his outstanding services as custodian of the Flock Book.

I In winning in one season his third major title —the American Open Championship—"Bobby" Jones showed the same wonderful consistency and power to produce his best under pressure that • had already secured for him a win in the British Open, the British Amateur, and the Sunningdale Gold Vase. As at Hoylake, he was hard-pressed by Morton Smith who, with a score of 143, was a point in the lead after 36 holes had been played, and by Macdonald Smith, whose score for 72 holes was two strokes more than "Bobby's" 257. This, by the way, included one round of 68, a. record for the Interlachen course. So far only one amateur, "Chick" Evans in 1916, has won both the American Open and Amateur titles in the same season, but Jones's play throughout the season has been so consistently brilliant that he will bo strongly fancied for the amateur championship also. The contest for this however, does not take place for nearly nine weeks yet, being scheduled for September 22nd-27th, at Hnverford, Pennsylvania.

American papers to hand give an account of the "rubber" game of the three 3G-hole matches fought .out by Abe Mitchell and Leo Diegel, the scene this time being St. Alba s. The following is from the New York "Herald Tribune" of June 15th: —

Diegel was two down at tho turn, After halving tho next three holes Diegel lost threo in succession to go five down. lie won two and halved one of the remaining three, to bo three down when they went to lunch. The American outdrove his opponent on most holes, but was often off line. Both got off some occasionally good putts, although Leo missed a fourfooter on the fifth. The cards for the morning round:— Diegel—Out: 443453544—36 Mitchell—Out: 433543444—34 Diegel—ln: 444555434—38 Mitchell—ln: 444443535—36 Mitchell outdrove Diegel in their afternoon play. Mitchell had a splendid run-up shot at the second. He holed an eight-yard putt for au eagle three ou the sixth. Diegel's drive on tho thirteenth was nearly out of bounds, but the ball hit a tree and glanced towards the green, enabling him to gain a half. Mitchell was out 34 in the afternoon, against 37 for Diegel. The American was five down at the turn of the afternoon eighteen. Their afternoon cards were: — Mitchell—Out: 434443444—34 Diegel—Out: 443644444—37 Mitchell—ln: 444443 Diegel—ln: 443443 Mitchell four up and threo to play.
