FOOTBALL.

♦ THE FOURTH TEST. WAITING FOR TICKETS. (TRESS ABBOCIATIOH TELBGIUM.) WELLINGTON, July 17. Facing an all day and all night vigil, several men started n queue at an early hour this morning at the Athletic Park, where the booking for the Fourth Test opens to-morrow at nine o'olock* By nightfall the queue numbered about 400, equipped with rugs, seats, books, and cushions and well supplied with pies, sandwiches, and thermos flasks.

The Rugby Union officials studied the convenience of those in waiting, ■who received a pleasant Burprise on being admitted to the stand to-day in order that they would be under cover. The line was kept intact in the corridors of the stand, where those in it whiled away tho hours by playing cards, singing, and, of courso, in discussing football prospects. It was a chance to help the unemployed, a big percentage of whom were in the queue. The Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association was able to engage some 40 or 60 unemployed returned men to purchase tickets for people who had applied to this organisation for assistance in the matter of reserving seats for the match, the applicants, of course, agreeing to make payment to the men engaged for the purpose. Mr A. E. Gorton (acting-secretary of the Association) stated that the action of the Returned Soldiers' Association was being taken solely to give the unemployed men an opportunity of earning a day's wage, and for the job which the men wore carrying out each was to receive 30s. An envelope containing the sum of £2 3s 8d (the prioe of four tiokets) had been given to each than, and when ho returned with the tickets he would receive his bonus of 30s. It had also been arranged to supply the men with tea and sandwiches, the cost of which would be borne bv the Benevolent Fund. "And," said Mr Gorton, "we migh put on a pie for them later in the night." The Returned Soldiers' Association was getting nothing whatsoever for the action it had taken. Other organisations and people have also engaged men to purchase tickets and are making the job worth while. The indications this afternoon, however, were that those who had not by then lined up would be out of the running for seats in the stand. ROUGH PLAY. NOT AN OFFICIAL MESSAGE. (rasas association tblboram.) WELLINGTON. July 17. As Dr. Adams has stated that his remarks at Wanganui which have caused such a stir were confidential and he expressly asked that they should not be published, it is necessary to state that the report emanating from Taihape and published in some papers as from the Press Association was not a Press Association message at all. As far a* can be ascertained, no reporters in Wanganui. one being absent on holidays, knows of any such request as alleged. Only one Wanganui reporter was present at the time, and his published remarks concerning Dr. Adams's statement are: "He was tellinjr those present that they in Wanganui would know just what did happen at Timnru." Dr. Adams, however, did tell - « "Herald" reporter over the telephone that he did not intend his remarks for publication. CANTERBURY UNION. MERIVALE V. OLD BOYS. The meeting of Merivale and Old Boys tomorrow should provide a fast and interesting game Merivale have given one or two bright displays of lato and should push the leaders. The Blues have a light, active vanguard supported by fast backs. There has not been as much cohesion in the rearguard as in former years, but in C. Oliver. Flewellyn, and Rhodes they have sound per formers. Old Boys are the most consistent side in the competition and play the best football. Their forwards, however, seem to be a little en tho light side, but their backs are at all times dangerous. 'Varsity, with a virile pick of forwards, meet Technical at Rugby Park. The Students, as usual in the second round, at* displaying much improved football and are training keenly with their matches against Victoria College and Otago University in view. At the Show Grounds Ohristchurch. play Sydenham in front of the grandstand, and Training College play I»ortb Canterbury in the Senior B competition on the adjoining ground. The game for Lancaster Park South is Linwood v. Albion. HOUSE MATCH. The team of 'Varsity footballers from College. House who travelled to Dunedin on Wednesday to play a jnatch against Selwyn College, were defeated yesterday by 14 points to 10, after what was described as a splendid game.

RUGBY LEAGUE* NEW ZEALAND TEAM. FIRST MATCH IN SYDNEY. PLAYERS ORDERED OFF. (took ora ow* cowtHrovDairT.) SYDNEY, July 10. Members of the New Zealand League team who played their first match against New South Wales last Satur. day should have £elt thoroughly at home, for there was a good pld southerly wind to remind them of tholr homeland, and plenty of rain and mud. In fact it rained from the time the teams went on to the ground until they-came off again, and it rained-for many hours before they appeared in theif sple«andspan jerseys. After ten minutes' play it was impossible to distinguish the members of one team from those of the other. Everyone was an "all black," including the referee. , Those who had seen the League team at practice had gone »way with the opinion that it might approach the New Zealand standard M set by many a famous non-League combination from the Dominion. This led to the belief, that the League game was increasing in popularity in New Zealand, and nothing would suit the New South Wales League better if it were. so. Matches with a high-class New Zealand combination would be a tremendous draw in Sydney,, rivalling those between New South Wales and Queensland. Considering the weather it was surprising that 10.000 turned up at the Show Ground Ust Saturday to see what coqld only have been a mud scramble ef the wildest type. Although the gate takings were £572, the League had had to guarantee to the Eoyal Agricultural Society the sum of £2OO, owing to the fact that the sheep show was in progress, Scramble Ja Mud. The conditions were such that it is impossible to say whether the New Zea« landers are any better than other League teams that hare crossed the Tasman, It was soon-evident that the team had had very little mateh play together. Had they been capable of combining better a bigger score must have eome their way, Territorially they bad the better of the play during both of the spells, but the New Zealanders lacked the finish that wan so necessary. Tho defence of the New Zealandere during the first spell at any rate was excellent. This was mainly due to the fact that the forwards hunted in a solid packAll through the game they were grouped round the ball. Their forcing tactics ?ained ground but did not gam scores, he New Zealanders tired before the New South Wales team, and it was during the last five minutes that the home side was able to add so materially to its score with two converted tries. Up to that time the score indicated tne respective merits of the teams. The game was marred by methods that culminated in the ordering off of a player on either side. The first man to go was Brogan, one of the stars of the home team. He went just before half-time. Previously Stevenson and he, in succession, had been eautioned by the referee. It was after Brogan's absence that New Zealand scored their only points in tip game. It was just before no-side that Clark was ordered off, He was detected in a scuffle with a New South Wales man. He appeared to be nonplussed by the decision, and looked Rejected as he walked off. The two players as they walked towards the gate of disgrace were given different treat- ! ment by the crowd. Brogan was cheered, but Clark was hooted. This was surely a reflection on the sportsmanship of Sydney crowds. The match was crammed full of instances of illegal interference, and New South Wales players seemed to be more artful than the New Zealanders in escaping the eyes of the referee. Many a New Zealander who did not have the ball was prevented from going after it. Putty Outstanding, Most critics agree that of the New Zealanders Dufty was outstanding, and a better player than when ho was last in Sydney. He kicked splendidly, and oft-times he gained as* much as fifty yards for his side, McMillan showed more resource, and he led his side splendidly He had more varied tactics when under pressure than any other membur of hie team. Watene was a good wing, with weight, pace, ajid cool determination. Tittleton was hurt early in the match, and the injury no doubt had a serious effect on his play, for he limped around the ground most of the time. Abbott, Gregory, and Wetherili played with the utmost dash on the slushy, squelching turf, and gave promise of spectacular deeds when the ground is dry—if it ever will be dry

again. Sydney has had more than ita share Of rain during the last month or SO, 6nd is Certainly due for a; little; sunshine now. Among the forward*, Bckhoff, Clark, and Steveneon were' tha pick, but they all worked very hard--and it was really hard work all the time. It is no wonder that these foTwardts'tKj. came tired towards the end of the gani# and lost control long enough for: New South Wales to win by,what is really a very substantial margin. Future of Code ta4>omiaiexu New Zealand, its present anal future under the Bugby League code, largely occupied delegates at the last meeting of the New South Wales League. First of all, the New Zealand manager*, wnfr were present, asked for, and-, .*•*• granted, financial assistance for the team to go to Queensland. The wet weather last Saturday, and the consequent poor "gate,'* was responsible fdr this request. It was mainly due to the small attendance on Saturday that the fixture list was left open, and- additional matches fixed for Sydney. Mr W. A. Cann, always a strong advocate of-fostering the'game in New; Zealand, wanted to Tcnow whether the Board, ef Control in Australia was going to meet the New Zealand managers in conferences to arrange for a regular interchange, of visits between the two countries. On being told by the secretary, Mr B. H. Miller, that at present there was no snob intentionj Mr' Cann launched a vigorous advocacy of this course, contending that if the authorities were assured of regular visits they could organise, and, further, the incentive would be greater to players in -both countries to take up the League game. - It would assist in preventing New ZealandlM from going to England as they had done in the past. If there were no toufca ahead players became apathetic.' Another member said it was a deplorable thing that no New South Wales Leagti* team had been to New Zealand ainoa 1032, and it was decided that the New South Wales League at least should take up'the matter with the Dominion representatives.
