QUEENSTOWN MINING.
PROSPECTING FOR QUARTZ. [THE PEESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, July 17. Eor some weeks past, writes the Queenstown correspondent of the Otago "Daily Times," prospecting for quartz has been - proceeding at sh& head of Lake Wakatipu .in ' the vicinity of the old Invincible mine. Mr Thomas Shore,, an experienced miner, has been in charge of operations, and he reports that very promising gold-bearing stone has been discovered. The actual location of the find is about a mile north of the old battery site of' the Invincible. It is on leasehold ground held by Messrs Kennett Bros.* of Rees Valley Station. It is understood that five claims,. embracing 500 acres of ground, have been pegged out, and licenses to prospect the areas thoroughly by driving will be applied for at the next sitting of the Warden's Court at Queenstown. The old Invincible furnished some rich returns in years gone by, and a revival of quartz mining in .this wellknown field would spell a new era of prosperity to the district. The commencement of active operations by the big Golden Terrace Com pany's dredge in the Shotover is being looked forward to with increasing interest. Several trial runs have been made with the various units, following which adjustments and minor alterations have been made. The management has decided to make no hurried starts, but rather to wait until everything is running smoothly. The dredge is such a colossal structure that it can be readily understood some delays will occur between the time of the completion of the building and the actual commencement of dredging operations'.
