RIVER BANK LIGHTING.
A FURTHER IMPROVEMENT. Proposals for a further improvement in the lighting of the river-banks were before the City Council last evening. The Reserves Committee reported: It will be remembered that some years ago the Christchurch Beautifying Association made a gift to the City of six river-side lamps, which it was agreed should be erected on the portion of the river-bank now known as Poplar crescent. When Mr T. J. Edmonds's offer to erect a band rotunda in this locality was received, the Beautifying Association agreed that as Mr Edmonds'B offer also included a number of river-side lamps, their lamps could bo placed elsewhere. It was suggested by the Council that they should be placed on the river-bank between Madras and Barbadoes streets, but this site did not meet with the approval of the Association, Other lights have now been erected in this locality, and the Association now asks that their lamps be erected, four on the south bank of the river between Colombo and Armagh streets, and two on the north bank between Colombo and Victoria streets. The Committee is of opinion that the portion of the river-bank now under consideration is inadequately lighted, and considerable improvement would be made by giving effect to tho Association's request. It is therefore recommended that this be done. Cr. E. R. McCombs said the clause should be considered by tho Electricity Committee.
Cr. A. E. Fraer said that Mr E. Hitchcock. general manager of the Municipal Electricity Department, (approved of the Committee's proposal. The clause was adopted. The Works Committee reported:— 'The City Engineer has drawn attention to the' fact that some of the ornamental lamps erected on the bank of the' Avon, between Manchester and Barbadoes streets, have been damaged as a result of vehicles colliding with them. He suggests that as a means of protection a kerbing bo erected. The estimated cost of the kerbing, together with construction of road and footway, is £320. It may be possible, however, to construct short sections of kerbing adjacent to each lamp. The committee recommends that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman of tho Works Committee and the City Engineer to take what action they deem necessary. If it is found necessary to proceed with tht. construction of the kerbing for the full distance, the expenditure can be met out of the unemployment fund. The report was adopted.
