TROUT OVA.

PACKING FOR TRANSPORT. A million brown trout eggs are now being paclced by Mr David Hope, on behalf of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, ,for delivery to kin* dred societies who have not the facilities available for collection. The work is in full swing and a consignment will be forwarded.to Wellington to-day. All the eggs have been taken froih the Lower fcSelwyn, and thfe work of stripping in the [society's gardens will commence towards the end of this week, provided the boxes arc retufbed from Wellington and elsewhere in time. The method of packing the delicate ova is interesting. Small trays have a piece of buiter-cloth on the top and bottom and the eggs are placed between them—2ooo to each tray. Two beddings of soft moss give added protection. There are 24 trays i& each box. and ice is psicked bver teverjf set so that wrtter will drip over the trflvs continually. The operation .occupies about an hour foir each hoi. The eggß "eye" on the eighteenth day, acrording to the temperature of the wnter. In the Society's hatcheriee the temperature is maintained St 54 degrees, Fnhr.—which is warmer tharl the air temperature in the building.
