BECKENHAM BURGESSES.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting a# the Beckenham Burgosses' Association was held last evening, Mr J. S. Ayres presiding. In reply to the Association's application for a grant for the erection of a new library, the Town Clerk wrote advising that the City Council had deferred the matter until the estimates were being framed. It was reported that Bome' of the councillors had been approached by members of the Association, the urgency of the matter had been discussed, and three councillors had inspected the building. It was decided to hold over the matter in the meantime. The librarian 'g report showed that 1190 books had been issued and 5i new books had been added, making a total of 1135. In connexion with the obtaining of loans by returned soldiers in the district for the installation of sewers, the secretary (Mr A. D. Cooperj reported that he had taken the matter before the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association. Some discussion had taken place at the recent Dominion Conference of the Association, and as a result tho Commissioner of Cro*-1 Lands, had written to the Drainage Board stating that his Department was prepared to give the Drainage Board priority over the Department's mortgages when application was. made by returned soldiers for loans for sewer installation. It was considered that this would considerably improve the position in the district, where there were several cases of hardship on the part of returned soldiers. The St. Martins Association wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of tho outlet from the ponds which drain into the river in Eastern terrace from Beckenham Park. It was thought that considerable improvement could be effected if the outlet were covered the whole width of the road. It was decided to write to the City Council, aiid also to the St. Martins Association, asking them to co-operate in the matter.
