MAORIS HORRIFIED.
CREMATION OP SIR MAUI POMARE'S BODY. (PBCBB ASSOCIATION TXLZOBAIt.) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 4. News of the cremation of the remains of Sir Maui Pomare has sent a wave of horror through the Maoris of North Taranaki, who for some days have been making arrangements for a huge tangi, when the body was brought to New Zealand, and buried in his birthplace, north of Waitara. A leading Maori says that the whole of his race is pained to an indescribable extent over the cremation, thus violating a sacred Maori tradition. "We hope and pray," he said, "that such a thing will not be introduced into our race. It would have been far better if his body had been laid to rest in California. I am speaking right from the back of the heart of my people." A meeting of Maoris is being called this week-end with the object of discussing the position, and the general feeling is that the cremated remains should be kept in Wellington, as they are not wanted in Taranaki.
