Miss Kutli Wynn-Williams (Cashmere Hills) is returning to-morrow from a visit to the North Island. Mrs J. B. N. Norris (Fendalton) is visiting her daughter, Mrs R. P. Fisk, Silverstream, Wellington. Mrs Maurice Louisson ("Littlebourne," Shirley) is leaving on Monday for Wellington, where she will be the guest of Mrs John Russell, Wadestown. Miss Isabel Turrell (Fendalton), who has been visiting friends in the North Island, is returning to Christchurch tomorrow. Miss McDowell left Wellington by the Maunganui for Sydney, where she will spend the remainder of the winter. Mr and Mrs Rothenberp; arrived from the north by the ferry steamer yesterday morning. Miss Joan Cottrell and Miss Gwen Hislop arrived from Duncdin yesterday, and are spending a few days with Mrs A. C. Cottrell, Mori vale lane. Tho engagement is announced of lab Hamilton, fourth son of William Mcnzies, of Mcnzies Bay, to Dorothy Constance, second daughter of tho late Percy Morland Acton-Adams, of Clarence Reserve, Kaikoura, and of Mra Acton-Adams. A goodly number of ladies gathered at the social held in connexion the Oxford terrace B.W.M.U. on Thursday afternoon. Words of welcome to visitors were spoken by Mrs T. Voller. vice-president. Mrs Reg. Voller and Miss Lucy Boyd sang solos, Miss Stevens gave an interesting reading, and Mrs Norman Dawson recited. Mrs Takle spoke of a recent letter received from Miss Cowles, one of their missionaries in India, the dangers to the missionaries in Indin on account of the present unrest. ANNUAL DANCE.

Eloquent testimony of the fine spirit of good comradeship and mutual confidence that exists amongst members of the staff of the National Mortgage and Agoncy Company (Limited) was given last night, wnen the Company's annual dauce was held at tho Winter Garden. It proved a delightful gathering, well organised and well attended, a speciallywarm welcome being extended by tho local staff to representatives of the firm 'a Ashburton, Timaru, Waimate, and Cfreymouth branches. The members of the Committee, to wnose preliminary arrangements the success of the dance was due, were Miss M. Nelson, Messrs E. W. Wade, J. Y. Allan, and J. E. Manchester, with Mr W. D. H. Scott as an efficient and energetic honorary secretary. Music was supplied by the BaileyMarston Orchestra, and many amusing novelties were distributed. The guests of honour were Mr Walter C. Brydon, manager of the Christchurch branch, and Mrs Brydon, and representatives of the company from Ashburton, Timaru, Waimate, and Grcymouth. Mrs Brydon wore a handsome dress of black soupio satin, inset with black lace, and a black velvet wrap, banded with patterned gold lame. Miss Nelson, the only lady on the committee, wore an emerald green georgette frock, with yoke and hem of gold lace, and a wrap of gold and black brocade, with fur collar. PHILLIPSTOWN KINDERGARTEN

The monthly meeting of the Phillipstown Kindergarten committee was held at the schoolroom on Tuesday, July Ist, when Mrs T. E. Taylor presided, and there were present Mesdames Manchester, Drayton, Woodham, Francis, and Miss Thomas. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Apologies were received from Mesdames Griffiths, Dunbier, and Sullivan. The school report showed:—Number on the roll, 70; highest attendance, 59; lowest attendance, 19; average attendance, 54. During the month a "mothers afternoon" was held at the schoolroom, Miss Hull speaking on the value and importance of kindergarten training. There was a Bplendid attendance and the mothers enjoyed the afternoon. Tea was provided, and served by the mothers. Visitors to the school included Mrs Sullivan (from the committee), and Miss Hardy, a missionary from India, who spent every morning of last week at the school. Subscriptions for the month were £2 15s 3d. Final arrangements were made for the coin afternoon to be held next week. On Tuesday evening a social was held at the schoolroom. Owing to the coldness of the night, there were not as many present as were expected. Miss Hull welcomed the parents, and musical items and games were enjoyed. Mrs T. E. Taylor spoke of the splendid work Mrs Empson had done for the school, both as a committee member, and as secretary. Mrs Empson had been a member of the committee for thirteen years, and much regret was felt at her resignation. Mrs Taylor, on behalf of the committee, then presented Mrs Empson, with a crystal vase, asking her to accept it with love, and every good wish. Mention was made also of the good work Mrs Dunbier had done on the committee, and regret was felt that Mrs Dunbier was unable to be present on account of sickness. Miss Gordon also spoke in appreciation of Mrs Empson's help. Miss Hull and Miss Suckling both thanked Mrs Empson for her interest in, and help at the school. Mrs Empson thanked the committee for their gift and kind words. Supper was served by the committee.

On Thursday last a meeting of the Eiccarton branch of the Girl Guides was held for the purpose of considering the question of encouraging the growth of the Guide movement in the Riccarton district. An effort is being made to promote the growth of a very strong companv of Guides and with this object in view a committee, comprising Mrs H. G. Livingstone (president), and Mesdames P. S. Wilding, A. H. A. Vivian, W. E. Walker, H. B. Whitta, H. S. S. Kyle, and Miss Elsa Whitta have decided to hold a garden party in Eiccarton at the beginning of November.
