NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach | to-day at noon, and at 12.44 p.m. in the river, and to-morrow at 12.5 p.m. on tbe beach, and 12.49 p.m. in the river. New Bridge. The contractors have lost no time in commencing work on the new bridge, and their operations continue to attract a great deal of interest. Tho Clerk of Works, who was appointed by the Council, commenced duties on Thursday. At the present time there is a general impression in the borough that the building of the bridge will necessitate the diversion of traffic to River road; also that tram passengers will require to tranship, und walk from one side of the bridge to the other. This impression is wrong, the position being that the bridge will be built in two sectious, and the work so arranged that traffic will suffer no serious interference. Progress League. At Tuesday's meeting of the Souttt Brighton Progress League, it was decided to make the matter of amalgamation with the City the subject of a debate. The debate will take place in the South Brighton HaJl on Tuesday, August stli. Owing to the importance •f the subject it is expected that there will be a record attendance. Mr J. Ainsxvorth will speak against the proposal, while Mr E. A. M. Leaver will be asked to speak in favour of it.

Card Evenings. The Whißt drives conducted by the Bowling Club continue to attract a large number of players. This week's winners were: —Miss C. Mazey and Mrs C. Smith, and Messrs C. A. Cooper and J. Gudge. A flag 500 evening was held at the residence of Mrs Luxton, George street, daring the week in aid of the funds of the New Brighton Croquet Club. Prizes were wdn by Mesdames T. Hulme, Smith, J. Scott, Miss Wilson, •nd Messrs B. Smith and J. Scott. A very pleasant, card evening was spent at the residence of Mrs W. Dean, George street, on Thursday, t«»e proceeds of which will be devoted to the Plunket Society. The successful players Were Mesdames Slater, Miles, and Weir, and Mr H. Throp.

Money Club. The Christchurch and Now Brighton Co-op. Money Club (formerly the New Brighton Co-op. Money Club) entered its new offices in the City yesterday. It is considered that the centralisation of headquarters will prove a great convenience to members. Athletic Club. At a special meeting of the Entertainment Committee of the New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club, it was decided to hold the annual Carnival Danee in Joyland on July 12th. School Committee. The headmaster reported that the attendances ' weregood in both primary and secondiry departments, and with the exception of eolds, and attendant winter ailments,- the health of the children was good. The Visiting Committee reported that various minor repairs were required. •Phe chairman reported that a new electric heater had been procured, and in■tailed In the Dental Clinic. It was deeided to apply to the Education Board' fpr a further supply of maerocarpa trees to replant a part of tin south school grounds. Messrs MuirSon and Bobins were appointed a visiting -committee. for July.

Soy Scouts. Ata meeting of the Boy Scout Committee Mr I*. Cliffy Stanford was in the ehtir. Mr C. C. March 'was appointed. Group Scoutmaster, and Mr S. Diehl fjeoutmaster. A resume of future work Urgjig riven by March, wbicb Was considered satisfactory. The Training Committee was to go further into the matter of various new branches of the work of instruction. Cnrnow was appointed on this committee, vice Major Furby, resigned The scout room has been removed to the kite previously occupied by the Drill Hill, and further detail work was gone into regarding the building of new premises. NORTH BEACH. A street light has been installed the corner of Beach road and th® fisplanade. The screenings on Bowhill load, Jutland street. Berry street, , and Pacific toad have been graded to the centre of the road. Lupins have been rat in Fleming street extension, Britannia street and Beach road. The formation of the track connecting Jubilee avenue with Berry street has been completed* Berry street extension and Britannia street have received a coating of metal. Osborneterrace reserve - hm been cleared of lupins, and a start fcas been made with' tree planting. Mrs " Betty' Sneesby has organised a ebdoert for the benefit of the Peace Memorial Hall funds. The concert will be given in the Memorial Hall on. Thursday next. The Wedding of the Painted Doll, which created such enthusiasm at the recent competitions, will be presented by 30 children, pupils of the- Iris Edmonds school of dancing. Many character dance duos will also be given. The following popular BYA artists will also assist—Nan Voller, Betty "Hilliard. Betty Sutton, iJra.ce Nixon.
