PAPANUI NEWS.

An Old landmark. With the demolition of "Dalraida," the old two-storey building at . the junction of St. James avenue and Windermere road, there disappears one of the old landmarks of Papanui. The c-Btate was acquired in 1883 by Mr John Cook, who was tjien manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company. Shortly afterwards he built the house, but only resided there for a little over two years. The next owner was Lord Bantry. Coming from India, he found the New Zealand winter very cold, and to stop any draughts in the house, he had all the door edges covered with a green baize. Some of it can still be seen on the doors. In 1887 the property again changed hands, Mr David Morrow, a then well-known business man, being tho purchaser. The Morrow family were resident there until 1928, when, owing to the extension of the City boundaries the estate was subdivided. The house was the first twostorey dwelling in the district, and also among the first to be built on the western side of the Papanui road. It was built in the days when kauri was more plentiful than it is at present, and the greater part of the timber is in a perfect state of preservation. Tbe place has been unoccupied for the past two years, except by a few persons who took shelter for a night. About 18 months ago, the building was on fire, bin was saved by the arrival of the brigade. In the grounds -are to bo seen some vory beautiful specimen trees, among them being the tallest Wellingtonian in Canterbury. Papanui School.
