A letter was received from the Education Department with reference to the erection of a post primary school at Papanui, asking what was the position in regard to tne number of pupils in the Technical iiigh Bchool drawn from the area set out by the College Board as belonging to the proposed new school. The estimate in had been that 200 of the pupils in the day school and '2OO in the evening school had been drawn from that quarter. Th« letter also asked whether in the event of the new building Deing completed at the ehd of the first term 1931, the Board would be able to utilise the building by transferring to it pujjils from, the day school Together with teachers, without leaving a substantial portion of the present accommodation in the main school unoccupied during the day time. An early reply was asked for in order that the Department might determine whether to call for tenders for the erection of a building or defer the erection in order that it might be ready for the reception of pupils at the beginning of 1932, The chairman stated that the director was getting out a return of the number of students _ coming from the Papanui district, which would be available in a few days. . . , It was decided that the Principal and the chairman should forward the information when it was gained. It was decided that the matter of forwarding remits to the conference of the Technical Education Association of New Zealand, to be held in Wellington in August, be left in the hands of the Finance and Parliamentary Committee, the matter to come up at the next meeting of the Board. The report of the Principal, which was adopted, stated that a valuable addition to the College's educational facilities had been a small museum established by one of the teachers, which was being augmented by donations of interesting articles from various sources.

The Trades Committee reported that it had received a return of enrolments in the carpentry classes, showing that the enrolment of apprentices was well up to that for last year, and that a total of approximately 118 were now in attendance.

It was also reported that a return, of enrolments in the motor engineering evening classes showed the same number of students as at the same date in 1029, and that the course of instruction was being revised with a view to making it as suitable as possible for the different classes of bovs engaged in the trade. The report was adopted. The Buildings Committee reported that it had received a letter from the Director of Education, giving details in regard to the proposed building for the No. 2 Technical College, and had instructed the Principal to ask the Minister to.give the Board an opportunity of seeing the plans and specifications, so that helpful suggestions mav be made in regard to them. It further reported that it had instructed the Principal to ask that the work of building may be started a,s early as possible to assist in alleviating unemployment in Christchurch. The committee recommended that a proposal for the installation of a heating system in the workshops be held over, and that up to £SO be spent in the meantime in providing slow combustion stoves in anv workshops where tne" are found necessary. The report was adopted and the recommendation approved. It was Voided on the recommendation of the Finance Committee that

claims be made immediately on the Education Department for subsidies amounting to £961 9s Bd, being £933 14e 8d on cash contributions, and £27 15s on contributions in material. The Finance Committee also reported that the financial statement at June 19th showed a total credit balance of £421 15s 7d. SCHEME TO PURCHASE FARM.

A fund having as its Bpeciai object the obtaining of a farm and other special facilities for the teaching of agriculture at the Chris fcchurch Technical College, is to be founded by the college's Hoard of Governors, following a decision at its meeting last night. Tho recommendation cam® from the Finance Committee, and was that a fund b<j established for the purpose mentioned, to be augmented by the paying into it of such part of voluntary contributions which were not given for special objects or which were not required for other purposes in the development of the school. Of voluntary contributions received since 1928. over £BOO had not been given for special purposes and this would be paid into the fund.
