MR A. A. BFLACHLAN NOMINATED. DECISION OF CITIZENS' ASSOCIATI6N.
Tho general committee of the Christchurch Citizens' and Ratepayers' Association decitkid last night to nominate Mr Archibald A- * McLachlan for the scat on the Christchurch City Council rendered vacant by the death of Or. F. 11. Cooke. The meeting, which,-was well attended,' was not -open to the Press, but a statement, issued-later, was to th« effect that the decision' had'' been unanimous. Mr McLachlan is a wellKnown Christchurch solicitor,; Information was before the meeting that an ex-member of the City Council, in sympathy with the Citizens' Association's viewpoint on municipal politics,. was definitely in the field iif the Association decided to refrain from contesting tho election. It was felt by tho meeting that it was only reasonable to give Citizens' Association nominees for the City Council a|T the support possible m view of the important proposals which, in the ordinary course of events, will come before' the Council in 'the near future. ■ " ' • Mr McLachlan contested ;the Riccarton wjat at the last election ahd was defeated by Mr H. 6. B;'Kyle, M.P., by only the narrowest *of mareros. Mr McLachlan was born in the Ellesmera district and is a grandson of tho lata Mr John McLachlan, TVI.P.,; lvho represented Ashbnrton for many .years. H« was formerly on the : Staff of the Christchurch Boys'' High School and well-known -&s _ footballer. He is keenly interested' •in various sports and is also cbief of the Scottish Society. Ho is closely associated with the Open-Air Schools' League.
