NEW ART GALLERY.
OFFER OF NORMAN LINDSAY PICTURE. In addition to the two pictures alreadv presented to the McDougall Art Gallery, the Mayor {Mr J. K. Archer) yesterday received from Mr Q. Sevicke Jones the offer of a picture by Norman Lindsay, the Australian artist, entitled "The Swing." It was reported some time ago that Mr Jones had offered the choice of two pictures, the Norman Lindsay one, and one by Sydney Thompson, In his lettter to the Mayor, Mr Jones says that as the Lindsay picture is the more valuable, he has decided to make a straight out gift of it. "The Swing" is considered both by the artist and by critics to be one of the best of LindBa.v'B water-colours. In connexion with offers of pictures to the McDougall Art Gallery it is considered that the necessity will arise soon for the setting up a committee which will decide whether or not pictures offered to the Gallery shall be accepted. Tt is probable that on this committee the Canterbury Society of Arts will be represented.
