MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Mr G. Bundy left yesterday for Rangiora, where ho will judge the open poultry section at the Rangiora Show. Fireman R. Woods was the recipient of an eight-day clock on the eve of his marriage, the gift of the members of the Ashburton Voluuter Firo Brigade. Concert at Hospital. A concert party organised by Mr 3 W. Marsden gave another of a series of entertainments in the Public Hospital last evening. The programme, which was greatly appreciated by the patients and staff, included a number of vocal and instrumental items, including old time songs. Hakatere Lodge. The Hakatere Lodge, No. 6S, 1.0.0.1"., met on Wednesday evening, when the N.G.. Bro. J. NisU, presided. Arrangements were made to visit Wakanui on Monday next. The quarterly returns were adopted. An invitation was accepted from Washington Lodge, Js T 0,28, Christchurch, to attend its annual social. After lodge a social hour was spent, with members of the Daphne (Rebokah) Lodge. Fancy Dross Dance. In order to augment the Allenton School funds a fancy dress ball was held in the Allenton School on Wednesday evening, and was an unqualified success. The children's session was held from 7 to 9 p.m., after which the adults indulged in dancing. Mr and Mrs Chapman supplied the music. More than one hundred children paraded in the grand march, and the judges (Mesdames R. Galbraith, S. H. Sullivan), and H. Stephenson) awarded the special prizes as follows: —Best-dressed pair, Marion and Rona Sparrow (Sa moan Chief and Chieftainess); gin, Colleen Yeatman (Mid-Victorian); boy, Malcolm Walker (Highlander); most original girl, Audrey Chambers (Orange Smile); boy, Lance MacLaren (Frothblower); cheapest costume, Ron. Hill f Thistle Oatmeal); best dressed girl under 10, Velma Healey (Gipsy Girl); boy under 10, lan McConnell (Nigger); E irl over 10, Dorothy Austin (Mother Goose); boy over 10, Bill McConnell (Arab Ohief); youngest girl, Yvonne Hollinson; youngest boy, Jimmy Weeks. Competitions were won by Mavis Mackay and Hughie John (lucky «pot waltz), Ray Grant (musical stick), Esine Taylor (addressed parcel). A special prize was awarded to Mrs Macklan for most children in fancy costume.

Golf., The Ashburton Golf Club will play matches against the Methven and Rakaia Clubs during the week-end, and will be represented by the following teams: — Ashburton v. Rakaia —Mrs 1. M. Perrier. ' ... The flag match played by .the ladies of the Ashburton Golf Club yesterday resulted in a wita for Mrs J. B. Isicoll, who carried, the flag to the eighteenth match played by the unqualified players was won by Mrs W. R. Byburn.

Rifle Shooting. The weekly shoot of the Willowby Miniature Rifle Club was held on Monday evening. Tho Hotty Button was won by T. Mackay. It was decided fco start the Ingram Cnp matches next week. The principal scores were:--r. Mackay 78, D. Mackay 75, R. Mackay 77, J. Sutherland 77, B. Clothier 78, V. Nichols 76, A. Pratley 78, L. Pratley 75, W. Dornan 77, J. Quaid 70, J. Keith 74, J. Small 73. , A match was also fired between West erfield and Willowby on tho home range. This also counted for the County Shield competition. The scores Willowby 616, Wosterfield 611.

LAURISTON. The first concert to be held in the Memorial Hall took place on Tuesday evening, under the auspices of tho Presbyterian Church, and was well attended. The choir of St. Andrew's Church (Ashburton), under Mr L. J. Watt (conductor), provided tho whole programme. The programme was of a high musical standard. On the motion of the Rev. A. S. Morrison and Mr C. A. Watt and the choir were accorded a hearty vote of appreciation. The Laurißton school football team played Methven Convent, at Methven. A very good game resulted in a draw—--6 all. For Convent, L Nordquist and J. McGirr each scored a try. For Lauriston, A. Leman scored a try and K. McNeill kicked a goal from a mark. Mr A. Lawrenco was referee.

MAYFIELD. The members of the Mayfield Ladies' Hockey Club held a very successful dance on Tuesday evening. _ There was a large attendance. Musie was supplied by Kelland Bros.' orchestra, of Temuka. Extras were played by Miss Elsie Allen and Mr S. Cross. A luckyspot waltz was won by Mrs S. R. Johnstone and Mr T. Sewell, the prizes being given by Mr B. Toner. Mr L. Lilley gave the prizes for the Monte Carlo one-step, which was won by Miss Mary Sewell and Mr W. Burgess.

MT. SOMERS. Stock is wintering well and all farm work is well advanced. Rain fell on 11 days in June, totalling 113 points, as against 478 points for the corresponding period last year. Frosts were registered on 27 mornings, making the year's total 90, compared with 79 last year. A maximum frost of 2? degrees, registered on the 22nd, was the most severe frost recorded. Snpw fell on seven occasions, with a maximum fall of four inches on the 21st.

At the Mt. Somers Miniature Bifle Club's range, on Tuesday evening, the first of a shoot to extend ovor four nights, for a trophy, was fired in conjunction with shoots for the Woolmers and W. N. Hood memorial cups. Best scores were:—Seniors —H. Hood 68; W. Morgan, B. Hood, L. "lood 67; W. Smith, J. Gorrie, H. Morgan 66; C. Stephen 65; G. Hood 60. Juniors—G. Green, G. Marsh 35; A. Thompson 34, T. Morgan 33. At the conclusion of two months' shooting, W. Smith 566, J. Gorrie 564, C. Gluyas 563, H. Hood and B. Hood 560. lead for the W. N. Hood Memorial Cup; and C. Gluyas 526, J. Gorrie 523, B. Hood 522, and H. Hood 521, lead for the Woolmers Cup. The Rev. H. M. Cocks, vicar of Mt. Somers, who underwent an operation at St. George'B Hospital, Christchurch, a few weeks ago, returned home this week-
