An interesting find near the "Wairau River on the sit© of an extensive old Maori pa is reported by Mr Charles Woolf, a nephew of the Harbour Board pilot, Captain Vendore. It consists of a medallion struck to commemorate the departure from England in 1772 of Cook's ships, Resolution and Adventure. The obverse side contains representations of the head of George 111., with the wording, "George 111., King of Great Britain, France and Ireland," etc. On the reverse side is a representation of the two ships. The Resolution _ and Adventure sailed from England in March, 1772. Captain Cook brought some of the medals with him and presented them to high Maori chiefs, urging to wear them as a mark of the favour of the great white King. The Turnbull Library has two copies, one of gold and one of bronze. The gold one, which is rather worn, was found at Queen Charlotte's Sound many years ago.
