FOOTBALL.

I SECOND TEST. [ AUCTION OF TICKETS. TEAMS PRACTISE NEW MOVES. A premature disclosure of tho scheme being promoted on behalf of the unemployed was the cause of the abandonment of a plan for the securing of a "corner" in tickets for the temporary stand ereoted to accommodate 3-50 spectators at to-morrow's Rugby Test match between Britain and New Zealand, but the idea has been successfully acted upon by unemployed returned soldiers, with the assistance of a City business man. Fiftyfour tickets were obtained in this fashion, and they will be resold at auction at 10 a.m. to-morrow by Mr A. .Watson, the proceeds to be paid into the Returned Soldiers' Association s unemployment fund. Although in no way connected with the promotion ot the scheme, the Association will gladly accept the money thus obtained, and it will carry a subsidy when applied to tho furnishing of employment. Fifty-five returned soldiers purchased, tickets for intending patrons unable to wait in the queue, the number so obtained being about 100. This transaction was arranged through the Returned Soldiers' Associatipn. Yesterday morning the British team trained at Lancaster Park, and the New Zealanders at the Show Grounds, about 500 people watching the former. The British forwards practised scrummaging under F. D. Prentice, captain of the team, and the baoks figured in a number of passing rushes, R. Spong beinp in charge. Scrum practice occupied most of the time of the New Zealanders, but the bflcks combined in some Quick passing with the speed on. Both teams practised a number of new moves, and developed a system of signals. it is now certain that J. S. R. Reeve, who injured an ankle while training at Timaru on Tuesday, will not be able to take the field, and A. L. Novis will fill hi* place. The British ten*n will be weakened a little bv this exchange. Messrs N. and 13. McKensie and G. Nicholson. North Tsland members of the New Zealand Selection Committee, will firrive bv the ferrv steamer tomorrow morning, and Mr A. McDonald, the Ota??o member, is due this evening.

CONTINGENT FROM WESTPORT.

TWO NIGHTS ON TRAIN.

(PBfSS ASSOCIATION TSLEOBAM.) "WESTPORT, July 8. A big contingent is leaving to-mor-row night for Ohrittchurcb for tha Second Test. It will be a ease of travelling all night. Cars are leaving Westport at 9 o'clock to connect with the train at Inangahua Junction at 11 o'clock, arriving in Christchureh at 8 a.m. on Saturday, and leaving on the return at 7 p.m. Begret is expressed in many quarters that the Railway authorities aid not provide for the train, to leave on the return on Sunday morning, instead ot Saturday evening, to give the excursionists a night's rest and a chance to attend theatres or other entertainments in Christebureh. It is pointed out that there should be no lack of accommodation in Christchureh on Saturday even, ing, as in these days of motor-cars many people leave the City on the return to their homes, when the oeeaslos that brought them there is over. A belated decision by the Railway authorities in this direction would be heartily welcomed.
