NORTH CANTERBURY.

KAIKOURA. At the card evening, by the Town School Committee on Wednesday, there was a fair attendance. Mrs H. T. Wilkinson was the winner of the ladies' prize, with 26 points, the men's prize going to Mr H. Chisnall, with 22 points. The many friends of Mrs Percy Morris,will learn with regret that she died on Wednesday evening. She took an active interest in the Presbyterian Church, and was held in high esteem by all sections of tho community, her kindly disposition winning her Jpany friends. Some time back she suffered a seizure, which precluded her from leaving her home, and after spending a pleasant afternoon with friends on Wednesday, she died suddenly. She is survived by her husband, to whom heartfelt sympathy will go out. Mrs Morris was a daughter of Mr Johanri Schroder. WAIKARI. A most successful function was held in the hall on Wedensday evening, when members of tho Waikari branch of the Oddfellows' Lodge held their annual ball. The hall was artistically decorated. Surridge's orchestra supplied the music, and extras were played by Misses L. Phipps, Brien, Edith, and Mr E. Smith. Among those present wore: Mr and Mrs James, Mr and Mrs Maine, Mr and Mrs Honeybone, Mr and Mrs Lowe, and Mr and Mrs Atkinson, Misses Kennard, M. Dalzell, Jefferson, E. Dalzell, Wilson, Munro, E. Galletly, D. Smith (Culverden), E. Brien, Brown, Waters, D. Judson, Doody (Hanmer Springs), S. Brown (Cliristchurch), Hall (Omihi), Carlyle, Gibbs (Rangiora), Turnbull, Atkinson, Jury, G. Earl, Gordon, L. Phipps, M. Blake, Wright, V. Earl, James (Rangiora), E. Huilf (Cliristchurch), Simpson (Christcbureh) Owing to there being so much sick ness the Waikari children's fancy dress ball has been postponed.

SOUTHBROOK. An "enjoyable afternoon was spent at the residence,of Mrs Noriuan Archer, when the members of tlio Southbrook Croquet Club and friends entertained Miss Dorothy Withers, prior to her departure from tho district. The afternoon took tho form of a card party. Prizes were won by Mrs E. Withers and Mrs R. Doggett. At tho conclusion of the afternoon Mrs E. A. Williamson (club captain) inado a presentation to Miss Withers of a leather suit-case and a hat-box from her many Southbrook friends. Miss Withers suitably replied, A hearty vote of thanks nvas accorded Mrs N. Archer for her kindness in putting her hoino at the disposal of the Croquet Club for the afternoon.

SPRINGBURN. Very fair winter weather was experienced for tho greater part of, Juno. The total rainfall, 169 points was considerably below tho average. This quantity includes two falls of snow, each of about two inches, one fall, accounting for 43 points and tho other, for 40 points. There were many .heavy frosts during the month. The fotal rainfall for the first half of this .year was 22.57 in., and for the corresponding period of last year it was 18.04 in. / . Miss Jennie Allan and Miss Mary McFarlane have left tho district to take up nursing. Before Jcaying for her training at Duncdin, Miss Allan was entertained at an evening given by Mrs James McFarlane, wtien a happy thno was spent in danefng and playing games. Mrs G. Hill contributed mjnsical items. Miss Allan received a number of presents, and Mr J. McFarlane wished her success. Mr Allan replied on behalf of his daughter. Miss Allan was also the guest of honour .at a "gift afternoon" given by Mrs A. M. Hart, Alfotd Forest. Before taking up her duties at Ashburton on Monday, Miss McFarlane was given an-evening at the home of Mr and Mrs C. Urquhart. A dance was held in the wool-shed, Messrs T. Green and G. Randall supplying the music. Mrs G. MoFarlane sang a number of songs. On behalf of the guests, Mr T. Green made a presentation to Miss McFarlane, and wished her success and happiness. Miss McFarlane replied thanking friends for their lundnoss and presents. *

ASHLEY BANK. A very enjoyable dance, arranged by the school committee, was held in the school. The proceeds will go to establish'a fund for repairs and the purchase of a school piano. Dance music was supplied by an electric gramophone lent by Mr Blain. Rangiora. Extras were supplied by Mrs J. A. Petrie. Messrs W. G. Mayer and H. Schmidt were M.C.'s. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr A. Beattie and partner. The weekly card evening took place in the school on Tuesday, when there was a fair attendance. The highest points for the evening's plav were scored by Miss G. Ludeman (23), and Mr P. j. Lindsay (28). Next week the players will journey to Southbrook, where they will play a match.

BROOMFIELD. On Wednesday afternoon the Selton School played a football match against the Broomfield team at Broomfield. the visitors winning, 18 to nil. Mr Ross Coleman was referee.

TAI TAPU. At a social evening held in the Tai Tapu Hall on Saturday -t-lie prizes, which were given by Mi\ George Mangels, were won by Mrs Jack Braithfrait© and Mr L. Jackman. There was a . large attendance of local people and visitors. The contractor (Mr Wendelborn) has commenced the building of the Memorial Church which Sir R. Heaton Rhodes is erecting in memory of his wife. The building when completed, will be an ornament to the district. Miss Hart, Cliristchurch, is on a fisit to Mrs It. Macartney, "YYaitaha." TTie friends of Mr and Mrs T. Brake will learn with regret that they are both patients in St. George's Hospital. Cliristchurch.

LINCOLN. The Ladies' Hockey Club have maintained tlieir position at the head of the Junior B competition. The Lincoln girls have gone through without losing a match. The usual social and dance in aid of the tennis funds was held in the Druids' Hall on Wednesday evening, when there .was a good attendance. The following were the prize-winners in the competitions:—Ladies, Mrs Wm. Hopley, Mrs H. Birch, Mrs YV. Jordan; men: Messrs T. Smith, J. Clark, •R. Mitchell. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by : Mr and Mrs W. Jordan, and a lucky spot waltz by Mr. F. Bulton and Mrs Hopley. Mr J. Hutchison supplied the music for the dance, .
