ARAPUNI.
to THB EDITOB or THB FaESS
Sir,—Since I wrote my first tetter coiu corning the Arapuni power-station, the report of the geologists has come, but from my point of view it was made too hastily. There was a report in Th» Pbe&s in the early stages of the trouble that a crack had developed along tne lip of the spillway between the main rock and the concrete. I pat that down to the concrete contracting; where it joined the rock being the weakest .art, it had broken away from the rock there. Now the reports are' so confusing one* cannot tell quite where the crack is. The geologists say a block of coontiy near the penstock tunnels between the spillway and the power-house broke- away, developing a crack extending along the front of the penstock tunnels and the spillway. Well, as I wrote before, it was a mistake to have a large spillway anywhere near the penstock. The excess water should be turned out of the water-race, or races, as far away from the penstocks as possible, leaving only a small quantity to go over . where the present spillway is. And this ii a job they could start doing right away. It is absurd to wait until someone is brought from some other country to tell them to do it.—Yours, etc.," GEORGE LEE. Templeton, July Ist, 1930.
