ANTARCTIC LANDS

CLAIMS BY UNITED STATES. REAR-ADMIRAL BYRD'S DISCOVERIES. (UKITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BY ELECTBIO TELBGBAFH—COPYIIIQHT.) WASHINGTON, July 1. Senator M E. Tydings (Democrat) introduced a resolution to authorise the Secretary of State to claim the Antarctio lands which Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd aiid other Amorican explorers had discovered. Senator Tydings sai<l tho Government would bo lax in its duties if it did not lay claim to the lands Byrd had disoovered, since they may be valuable in 50 or 100 years.

(Received July 2nd. 5.5 p.ni.) WASHINGTON, July 1. Senator Tydings said that ho proposed the action because Great Britain laid claims to much of Antarctica, although these regions "include two areas discovered bv American naval officers as early as 1820 and 1840." The Senator sketched the activities of Palmer and Wilkes, ivhose discovery of Wilkes Land had actually been placed under tho administration of the Governor-General of Australia. Ho said: "No sweeping claim had been made by Great Britain until 1926. when Australia at the Imperial Conference made claims to tho coast land outsidn the Falkland dependencies: Enderbv Land. Kemp Land. Mary Land. George the Fifth Land. Oates Land, and the area west of Adela Land.'* It is believed that whatever action mav be taken, it will not occur before Rear-Admiral Byrd lodges his report, and this is thoroughly studied by the officials.
