LINCOLN COLLEGE.

CONGRATULATIONS ON RISE IN STATUS. Eeference to the new status acquired by Lincoln College was mado by Dr. B, R. D. Milligan at the meeting of cho Philosophical Institute of Canterbury last evening. In extending congratulations to Professors E. E. Alexander and F. W. Hilgendorf, Dr. Milligan said that Lincoln College was now definitely recognised as an integral part of the system of higher education. It was very gratifying to the people of Canterbury, particularly those who had taken part in founding the institution. Dr. C. C. Farr said that the question of status was everything in regard to Linc'oln College. "1 doubt myself if the title of Professor is very much," he added. "It has its drawbacks as well as its advantages. They are to be congratulated on going to University status.'' To illustrate ono of the draw- . c s of th»* title, Dr. Farr said that when he applied to have hiR name entered in the telephone directory as Professor Farr he was told that the Department did not allow advertising among the names. (Laughter.) The Institute decided to forward its congratulations to Professors Alexander and Hilgendorf.
