The cala.ogue did not appear to use to be as good a one as its predecessor, but nevertheless there was a good portion of •wethers yirded, as well as numerous consignments of" fair average ewes. The bulk of the entry, however, comprised medium to light grades. The market opened at the best of last week's Tates, and as the sale proceeded it wa3 evident that last week's values were to be the order of the day. In some cases wo doubt if they were maintained, but for the most part that was the levei of va.ucs. One or two North Canterbury consignments of wethers, weil-growii with good fleece, and well-finished, were penned, and it really was quite cheering to see this grade of sheep ill the market. H. FAT CATTLE. H MATSON and CO. report the yarding jn to-day'* market totalled,446 head, being 63 less than were forward the previous week. The North Island contributed 49 steers, and the West- Coast a consignment of about 50 steers, heifers, and cows, of which only tho heifers and cows were offered. The balance of the entry was made up of local cattle and North Canterbury station lines, •with an odd truck from the south. Although the bulk of the cattle graded from good to prime quality, very few consignments were really well fattened, and apart from the North Island cattle heavy-weights were very scarce. The competition forthcoming for tho North Island steers was very keen, and prices ranged from £l6 12s 6a to £l9 2s 6d, the total lino averaging £l7 9s 6d per head, and the approximate price per 1001b for the line was -lis. The top price steers to-day was £23 2s 6d, cows £lo 2» 6d, and heifers £l4 17s 6d. Speaking generally of the sale, there was a drop of 2s per 1001b on extra heavy cattle, but apart Irom this there was no change in values, which remained on a par with last Wednesday. H.
