NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The seating accommodation at Salvation Army Hall waa well taxed on Thursday evening on. the occasion of an entertainment given by the Rangiora and Lin wood companies ot Life Guards. Ensign Searle, of Lmwood, presided ana opened with a short address. In the programme that followed there were company songs by the local guards and visitors, gymnastic march, pyramid and dumbbell drill by the Linwood Guards; recitations by Edna Arnold, Pearl Louden, and Alma Watson; vocal solo by M. Clark, and duets by I. Rimmer and M. Clark; dialogues by Instructor Hiazelhurst, Patrol Leader I. Rimmer, Bobbie Rimmer, and a party of Rangiora Guards; Maori choruses and Guards E. and MArnold; semaphore signalling by Jean DuffiU; a badge demonstration and a sketch from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by the local guards. At an interval proficiency badges were presented by Regimental Leader Lewis to the following Rangiora Guards: —Edna Stringer, Edna Arnold, Betty Cooke, Cora Scott. MUbrev Heap, and Evelyn Beck. Tne programme waa carried out in a very pleasing manner and evidenced careful training. The members of the croquet section of the Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club held a cards afternoon at the residence of Mrs P Luisetti on Thursday. Prizes given by the hostess were won by Mrs H. Jones and Mrs Forward. At Eveiy body's, Town Hall, this evening, Bebe Daniels and Neil Hamilton will be seen in "What a Night," one of the funniest melodramas that this popular pair have ever starred in. The second episode of "The Scarlet Arrow" will also be screened, entitled "Thundering Death."The box plans are at The Bristol and day sales are at the Golden Gate. KAIKOURA. Mr A. B. Clark is confined to his bed, having contracted a chill on Wednesday evening. The Women's Social Club met on Wednesday evening, the subject of their discourse being a play reading of "The Old Bull," by Bernard Gilbert. Games of interest were played and supper was served. AMBERLEY. At a general meeting of returned soldiers and ex-Servicemen, held in the library on the 14th inst., it was decided to forzn a Social Club. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patrons, Hon. G. W Forbes, and Mr G. D. Greenwood; patroness, Mrs F. A. Courage; president, Mr S. D. T. Boyoe; vice-Dresident, Mr J • Oxley; hon. secretary, G. E. Graham; committee, Messrs W. Moles. A. Gray, and L. Harris; treasurer, A. Parkinson, A. Munro, W. Arthur, and T. M. Baker. It was decided thai a dance be held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Amberley, at . an early date. SEFTON. H»e Sefton Methodists held their church anniversary service on Sunday last. Special services were held morning and afternoon, and the preacher at both was the Rev. A. Hopper, of Papanui. The church had been tastefully decorated, and the congregations wore good. Miss. Ashworth presided at at the organ. , The annual tea meetjrie and concert were held in the Rink- ■ Hall on Wednesday evening. The arrangements for •the . tea had been made by the ladies of the Methodisft Guild, and there was a large attendance., A concert party from the choir of the Papanui Methodist Church provided the concert, and Mr Turlove gave several much appreciated elocutionaity items. The Rev. J. R. Nelson presided. The report of the church trust was given, which showed a balance of £4ll towards the. cost of a new church. Visitors from a distance were entertained at supper after the concert. BELFAST. A ooncert given in the Town Hall on Thursday evening by the Bristol Concert Party, in aid of the funds of the local branch of the Plunket Socety, was well .patronised. The Rev. H. O. Hanby presided and every item was well received. These were given by Miss Pehberthy (contralto), Mr J. H. Cocks (baritone), Mr Fraser Thomson (recitations), Mr Robert Clark (violinist), and Mrs J. Hi Cocks (accompanist). LINCOLN. The weeklv- social and dance in aid of the Tennis Club were held in the Druids' Hall on Wednesday night. The following were the winners of the various competitions:— Hoplev, and Mrs Gallagher; men—Mr J. Gallagher, and Mr R Willan; lucky spot waltz. Miss M. Rickerby and' Mr A .Mitchell: Monte Carlo waltz. Miss Smith and Mr Gallagher. Mr J. Hutchinson supplied the music for the dancing. _ Miss .Cpstello has returned to Dunedih after havins spent the College vacation at home. LADBROOKS. At the monthly meeting of the school committee there were present Messrs F. J. Coles (chairman). F. W. Meyer, and R. J, Ware. The Rev. A. H. Acheson waited on the committee as a deputation in regard to Bible instruction in school. After some discussion it was decided that instruction be given by Mr Acheson or his deputy.

SPRINGSTON. ; The first of a liSries of socials organised by the Returned Soldiers was held in the Public Hall, when there was a good attendance. Competitions were won by Miss M. Braven, Mrs J. Marshall, Messrs J. Moore, and a. l>uif. After supper a dance was held. On Tuesday afternoon Mr G. I. Alley visited the district with his library van. and a number of people availed themselves of the opportunity of borrowing books. M , h „ , On Tuesday evening in the Methodist Schoolroom a lantern lecture was given by the Rev. A. H. Fowles, on New Zealand scenic wonders, covering Wellington, Waoganui river, mountains. Waitomo Caves, and Auckland. There was a good attendance, and the lecture was much enjoyed. A working bee was recently held to clean up the library ground. A meeting of the United Football Club was held recently Mr W. E Cox presiding There was a good attendance of members and rules and constitutions of the club were drawn up.

HALSWELL. Great interest was taken in the fif-teen-a-side football match, which was played on Thursday afternoon in the Domain, between the teams of the Halswell School and Tai Tapu. After keen play, the game resulted m a win for Halswell by 14 to 3. Se wyn Wilhelm played full-back for Halswell. Mr Clathie was referee. Halswell School provided afternoon tea for the visitors, who were conveyed by friends in ears.
