Reefton Hospital. The Inangahua Hospital Board met last evening. Mr J. B. Anld (chairman) presided. Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, Di-rector-General of Health, wrote that £IOOO for a new isolation ward could not be granted. He asked that the estimates be amended, and. stated that if an isolation ward were considered necessary, it should be included in next year's estimates. The secretary, Waiuta Medical Association, forwarded £37 10s, contribution for May. I Merlvale Football Club. The Merivale Football Club has notified the Westland Sub-Union that their senior team will visit Hokitika on Wednesday next, and will play a matchin the afternoon against the Sub-Union team. The visitors will play a combined Grey team on Tuesday, returning to Christchurch on Thursday. Gold at Okarito. It is understood that in the opening out work at the Okarito Five-Mile Gold Company's claim very encouraging results were obtained. The workmen have been engaged on an excavation for the blow-up plant, and had to penetrate a layer of peat before reaching the beach lead, at a depth of about 20ft. The spoil removed was treated roughly through a sluice-box, 20 ounces of gold being won. Gold-saving tables have now been installed, .and a better yield of gold may be obtained, bearing out the prospecting results which, at the point of operation, were about nine penny-weights to the load. There is said to be a considerable area of beach lead to work aB disclosed by the earlier prospecting. Biver Erosion, To-day Messrs T. A. Johnston (District Engineer of Public Works), John Higgins (County Engineer), J. O'Brien, M.P., and Cr. A. Bobinson visited the Tereinakau Settlement for the purpose of making an inspection of the serious erosion on farming lands caused by tho Teremakau river. They were met by Messrs E. Lloyd, L. Bassett, and Thomas. It was found that in several places the river had made an encroachment on the farms of the settlers, removing areas, in some instances, a quarter of a mile wide. It was seen that in places the bed of the river was only slightly lower than the riverbank, with the result that in flood times a considerable area of the adjacent farms was inundated. The southern bank of the river had* not suffered similarly to the northern bank. The riverbed was followed for a distance of three miles, and full observations taken, with a view to deciding on measures to protect the farms from further encroachmont by the river. Coastal Road. The Fox river, on the Coastal road to Westport, has been unfordable for J the past few days, owing to floods, and motorists have had to resort to the Buller Gorge route. Temporary piles to be used during the construction of the bridge, have been driven, and it is expected that the driving of permanent piles will be commenced at an early date. Hokitika Gas Company* Tho fifty-sixth annual moeting of the Hokitika Gas Company, Ltd., was held last evening, Mr D, J. Evans (chairman) presided. The financial result, oi the year's operations justified the payment of a dividend of fs per tb share, making a total of 6s 6d for tho year.
