GALE AT LYTTELTON.

One of the strongest southerly gales experienced at Lyttelton for many months set in shortly before midday yesterday. All the afternoon the harbour was a mass of whitetopped waves, with frequent squalls lifting the water in sheets of spray. Launches had an exceedingly rough time, and work on the wharves was interfered with to some extent. Until 5 o'clock last evening there was very little rain, but at nightfall there were frequent showers of rain and hail, which continued well on in the evening. The motor-ship Maui Pomare, en 'route from Auckland to Lyttelton, sent a radio message yesterday morning that she was being delayed by the gale, and expected to arrive at Lyttelton at 9 o'clock last night. However, with the continuation of the adverse weather it is douhtful if she will arrive before this morning. The small steamer Cygnet was also duo Inst night, but is probably sheltering at Knikouro or Cape Campbell. The Gale left Lyttelton yesterday afternoon for Dunedin. but would probably not be able to weather the Peninsula last night.
